I am a chicken that likes to keep working versions until I am fully sold. That said, in testing I gave made a R6 install (my gift via upgrade) and have it mostly working. Now, is it possible to take my latest backup from 5.5 and restore it into R6? I looked around some and did not see others doing this using arch Linux now I was unsure if it would work now even if it did previously.
Thanks alot guys.

I don't see why it wouldn't work but I'm no expert either. You can always hook your R5.5 box's HDD up to your R6 box such that BOTH HDDs are on the same physical machine and simply copy the R5.5 HDD to the R6 HDD (destroying your R6 install but allowing you to have a perfect copy of your R5.5 box. You can do this very easily using gparted's liveCD (google it). Now that you have a copy of your R5.5 HDD, simply remove the original R5.5 HDD and put it back in your "real" R5.5 box, now boot off the copy you made and do an upgrade w/ the R6 disc.
Seems like a bit of work, but it will leave you with a complete backup of your R5.5 box with no data loss... better safe than sorry

so this scenario works:
- backup 5.5
- install R6
- configure R6
- restore R6 with 5.5 backup
Just wanted to clarify I am not asking about performing the upgrade against 5.5.
Thanks.

Hmm... I suggested:
Back R5.5 to your R6 machine erasing your R6 install in the process
Install/upgrade it from R5.5 to R6

Upgrades of knoppmyth have always replaced the entire contents of the root partition. As such any additions that you have made are normally lost during an upgrade. The main exceptions to this are things that are configured by stuff in your home directory (because that gets saved and restored from the backup) and changes to mythtv settings because they are stored in the database which is also restored from the backup. There are some other special cases of things that get restored too.

So what I think wmcvetty wants to do is copy the recordings and backup files from R5.5 to the preconfigured R6 box, and then restore the backup so that the new R6 install can find the old recordings, etc.
The only problem I could see is where the database schemas are different in the different versions of MythTV. The normal Upgrade process would upgrade the database after it restores it, does the Restore menu do the same?

The backend actually does (most of) the upgrade of the DB.
The DB portion of the restore wipes out the schema and rebuilds it exactly (with the usual obscure and technical caveats) as it was when the backup was made. Same schema layout, same data contents, ...
When the BE is restarted it recognizes if the schema version (stored in the DB) is old and applies the appropriate schema updates. There are a couple minor tables that get done by other means (mythweb stuff for example).
Still, it's generally better to do an upgrade using the backup than to restore over a new install.

Well I made a backup of my hard drive and attempted to run the R6 Upgrade against it. It says it is completed, but when it goes to reboot I see an error in the bottom right hand corner, some kind of parse error.
I will try and catch it and log a flyspray ticket.
I seem to have issues getting it to configure my hardware too, I am wondering if something is stopping the upgrade early with an error.
Fun stuff! Well, the Wife does not agree....but oh well...haha! Hard drive backups are a good thing.

I think I am with wmcvetty. I have built up a completely new box to run my R6 on. I want to do a complete fresh install of R6. I do not want any tweaks, etc from the R5.5 because I am using none of the original hardware. All I want is to restore the old recordings. That's it, nothing more. What is the best way to do this? On my first run we installed R6. We copied the backup from R5.5 and then did a mythrestore. This did not work well at all.
Am I crazy for wanting to so this? Any advice on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.
I pulled the 5.5 disc from the other box and have it installed in the new system for file transfer. of course a backup was done before it was pulled.

Add me to this list. I am of the same mind. All I want to do is transfer my recordings from my 5 year old R5F27 box to my shiny new R6 box. I vaguely recall the concept of restoring only the videos has being discussed before in the context of other releases. I plan to hunt for the solution. The process involved only restoring part of the database that pertains to the recordings. There were some catches, but I don't remember what they were. If I figure it out, I'll post it here, but I might not get to it for awhile.

The same concepts (Except the NFS portion) should work the same. The NFS portion was used so I could copy the recordings over the network.

Actually somewhere I helped someone work up a more comprehensive list of the tables associated with recordings. It may be in the backup/restore thread linked from the R5.5 Hints. If you lose things like the markup tables things can get pretty ugly.
