My machine has been behaving faultlessly except that it will not record one particular show, RPA. I attribute it to the machines sensitive nature and not being able to stomach graphic medical procedures like me, but my wife does not accept that explanation. This problem has been going on for at least 4 weeks and I cannot see the cause.

The recording is set to record one episode per week and starts as expected on time and continues recording for the allotted time. The show appears on the Recordings list but when you attempt to watch it says it cannot find the file. Looking in the /myth/tv directory there is no file with the correct channel and time label and the file is not listed in /myth/pretty. I am able to delete the recording from the Recordings list. Last night I tried to watch the recording as it was recording but got the same message and the program continued to record until the allotted finishing time. When recording this show there is always another recording going on simultaneously but it is only RPA that causes the problem. My machine successfully records other shows simultaneously.

Last week I deleted the recording request and initiated the recording from the Program Guide for one showing only. Same result.
This week I re-programmed to record one showing per week - same result.

I attach the relevant part of the /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log

Can anyone see a problem here? Any other logs that might give me a clue?
Since it is only specific to one particular show, have I accidentally set something wrong?

I notice it attempts to use card 4. The card numbers beginning at 3 suggests you have previously deleted and re-added your cards, or you have changed them?

What does the EPG say when the show is highlighted? It should let you know the recording rule and whether or not this showing will be recorded.

Has it *ever* recorded RPA successfully?
What have you tried so far?
What happens when you manually try and record two shows at once?
What happens when you schedule two shows at once?
Is it always the same card (4) that fails to record RPA?

Mike

Thanks for replying Mike.

Yes my two cards are 3 and 4 due to deleting and re-adding way back in the distant past. Can I get them back to 1 and 2?

The EPG has the icon for recording and opening the item shows the correct rule. The Upcoming Recordings also has it listed corrected.

Yes it has successfully recorded RPA months ago. The only break between the 2 cases is that I retuned the cards in about June to pick up the new channels (channel 1 and SBS2). My EPG grabber is Shepherd. This raises another question about my list has two entries for most of the HD channels, should I not use one of them?

What I have tried so far is to cancel the rule and record manually from the EPG-same result, then add a new rule - same result. The trouble is I can only try things once per week.

As far as recording two shows at once, I normally have no problems whether I do it manually or schedule it.

As far as the card goes I only have logs for the past 2 weeks and both used card 4. I guess I could try forcing it to use card 3 but it thinks it is recording successfully on card 4.

If you delete all cards (I forget the exact wording on the menu, it's the global all, rather than the per host one) it should start over.

Don't forget to redo the input connections after you add back the card definitions.

I'm wondering if maybe your rescan didn't delete any of the old channels and your tuner is attempting to scan on a non-channel frequency. You would have been re-scanning for "GO!" correct? Channel nine re-jigged all its other frequencies to accommodate (noticed this at the time, also live in Melbourne). Is RPA a channel 9 show? Actually I'll check... Yes it is on channel 9 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RPA_%28TV_series%29. I'd suspect it's trying to tune to a channel that isn't quite right. I'd probably delete whichever channel you have it recording and re-scanning. Deleting it first will be important, though. Stop mythbackend and go into setup --> Channel Editor and delete channel 9 (hit 'd' on your keyboard), then do a channel scan of existing transports. It shouldn't affect any other channels.

Mike

Mike,

That could explain it. I did the rescan before GO! came along so it may have affected the other frequencies, although I believe I can watch channel 9 through myth. I will check tonight.

Ah, that's even easier. Don't delete any channels: Just re-scan and you'll probably be OK.

After some further testing I found the problem is common to all recordings on channel 9 but RPA happens to be the only one I have recorded. I was able to watch Nine and Nine HD live and I could record while watching but could not record from the EPG.

I have now deleted all cards and re-added the cards and they are now numbered correctly as 1 and 2. I rescanned the channels and picked up channel GO!. All channels work correctly on watch live TV. I reconfigured Shepherd and it now picks up all channels including GO!.

But I still cannot record Nine or NineHD or GO! from the EPG. I still get the "file cannot be found message".

Any suggestions? I guess I should try deleting all channel nines and try a rescan (when I get some more time) although the fact that GO! doesn't tape makes me doubt it will help.

Before I do delete channels I have a question about what channels I should retain. The channel listing as it appears in Mythweb has a total of 43 channels . For the first 14 the channum column is blank and all of these are repeated later with a channel number except for TenHD.

Should I delete all these channels from the database?
Could these channels be the cause of my problems?
Should I delete channels that do not yet exist (SBS3, SBS4, ABC3, etc.)?

If you have tried to use my tv_grab_au script but haven't populated the xmltvids it sets up fake channels with no channel number. Delete every channel that doesn't have a number associated. You can find these by going into the setup --> Channel Editor. Don't delete abc3 etc. Just associate them with the appropriate EPG (e.g. xmltvid="ABC-Vic" for ABC3) which makes it easier to fix when and if it ever gets its own stream. While you're in the channel editor, set any other missing xmltvids (see oztivo web site for what they should be). After you have set them correctly, exit the setup, start the backend and run mythfilldatabase from an xterm.

Make sure your EPG has a channel number (9,90,99) for the problematic channels and that everything is now OK.

The channel re-scanning is a bit of a pain because of this (and other things). Don't know why commercial stations have to change things so often.

Mike,

Yes I did originally use your script but now use Shepherd for my EPG so I will delete the unwanted channels and check the numbers.

Can I do the editing through Mythweb because I find it much easier to navigate around?

As I now use Shepherd is your advice regarding getting missing xmltvids from oztivo still applicable? I thought the Shepherd setup sorted all that out. I am not at my machine so I cannot check if there are any missing xmltvids.

Maybe the cleanest thing would be to delete all channels, rescan and reconfigure Shepherd or is that over the top.

Yes use mythweb.

Not sure. I don't use Shepherd.

Probably a bit OTT. If you delete the channels and reconfigure shepherd you'll probably be OK.

That seems to have solved it, although I will have to wait to see if RPA records on Wednesday night to convince my wife.

I deleted all the unnumbered channels ran mythfilldatabase but still could not record from Nine or NineHD. I noticed that Nine and NineHD had duplicates in the list so I deleted one of each (did not rerun mythfilldatabase) and am now able to record both channels from the EPG. Thanks a lot for your help.

Mike, I had read your opinions of Shepherd in other posts but it has worked faultlessly for me since I switched to it.

Take it easy, that was a long time ago. It just didn't suit me, had too many dependencies and I was wary that time it upgraded and the new version was broken. My opinions are changeable, so don't label me a shepherd-hater ;-)

Glad it worked, and SWMBO is happy, too.
