Hope your problems have gone away. I had an issue on my first Linux system which was kind of similar to yours. It turned out that the on board NIC only had one Linux driver available and it was only compatible with a 2.4 kernel. This was in 2005 and 2.4 was already ancient. I don't know why my Mandriva 2.6 kernel based system pulled in a 2.4 driver, but it did - without warning (at least none that I perceived as a beginner). After googling, I found out that it was known to cause crashes on 2.6 based systems, which is exactly what happened to me. It took me a year and a half to find that out, since the logging just stopped when it crashed and there wasn't really anything to follow up on. Installing an Intel PCI NIC permanently solved the instability issues - not because of better hardware, but because of a good driver. Imagine all the drivers that could cause trouble in your system! I don't believe for a second that you have hardware trouble. Neither is it software trouble - since the system obviously works for other people. It lies somewhere in between!

May the force be with you in your upcoming assignment as well!

Cheers,
/Chris
