Post subject:  Can I Import Music Into the Database Without Copying Files?

I have a 500 GB USB attached, and am building my database for the first time. On import, it cranked away until it got to D, then told me it couldn't copy anymore to myth/music. I didn't realize it was copying the files. Can I shut that off and just create a database and leave the files where they are?

Hi,
create a symbolic link in /myth/music which points to your usb drive. Then rescan your collection.

The gui environment I'm using to manage files on this machine - pc man on Parted Magic Live CD- doesn't seem to have a create symbolic link command. How do you create a shortcut from the command line?

I mount my shared music folder off my file server into /myth/music on bootup and it works great.

Just added it to /etc/fstab

I do the same with my photos as well.

Or, you could just change the path in the setup menu (mine is in Swedish, but tools, setup or similar, music settings) for music and pictures, respectively. I do think you need to mount them somewhere - UNC paths probably don't work. Either way, you definitely don't have to (=should not) copy music and pictures to your myth box. Same thing with videos.

Cheers,
/Chris
