Thanks for the pointer. I also had to recompile lirc_dev and lirc_i2c for by PVR-250. I now have a working system on 2.4.22. Hopefully capture is stable now.

Success at last :D

I followed BugRogers direction to get APIC removed from the kernel.
In order to get install-nvnet.sh to work I hade to delete /usr/src/nforce.
