I bought a different TV and there is no other way of getting sound into it other than over HDMI. Is there anyone that has been successful at getting sound over HDMI to work wit R5.5. I don't have the resources to upgrade to anything newer right now.

Yes it is possible but you may need to update alsa to at least 1.0.19 (depending on your chipset). And this may require you to build it yourself. I have an nvidia based HDMI. Its support started in 1.0.19. More recent boards may require a more recent alsa.

I don't know if the R5.5 repos are still around so you may have to pull stuff from debian.

I'm in a rush today but wanted to help get you going... The following are the notes I had for myself at the time but again double check what is available now. Please don't take these steps verbatim without double checking current available packages. Sufficiently up to date packages may already be available but in case you do need to compile this will help guide you.
Code:
# Update alsa to at least 1.0.19
# Edit /etc/apt/sources.list
# change stable to unstable
apt-get update
apt-get install alsa-source alsa-base alsa-oss
cd /usr/src
tar xjvf alsa.tar.bz2
cd linux
make-kpg modules_image
dpkg -i ../alsa*.deb

# alter asound.conf according aplay -l
# alter the mythtv audio setup accordingly

# update /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf
# Use HDMI output
ao=alsa:device=hdmi

Something tells me that you will spend less resources upgrading to at least R6.04 then trying to get HDMI sound with 5.5. Lots of us have got HDMI sound working and there are a few write ups around with 6.x

Thanks Christ for answering back. I am going to put a hold this. I did have all the 5.5 source code to build with at one time but i can't find it now, I might have deleted it. One of my resource restriction is that I am on dial-up right now until I can fine another internet provider that I can live with. Another restriction is that this is the main BE machine in the house and if I screw it up life gets unpleasant. I do have 7.2 backend replacement machine build started but competition is a ways out. Sorry to waste your time. The short term solution is a set of computer speaker.
Thanks

No probs. And Big Boy Stan is quite right. Better to move forward. 7.2 has lots of nice stuff and the audio has been complete reworked.

You don't have a surround sound amp or at least a bookshelf speaker system with RCA ins? My MythTV doesn't even send audio to my TV.
