Post subject: | Downloading recorded programs |
I'd like to transfer recorded programs from my MythTV box to my desktop where I can burn them to DVD or VCD. I'd like to use either FTP or removable hard drive (tray enclosure or FireWire). My questions are... Does KnoppMyth R4 support IEEE1394 (FireWire) and if so, how would I go about accessing the drive? Is FTP access to the recorded programs directory available to any of the users configured during install (root, mythtv, myself)? Any alternative suggestions and information is appreciated. ![]() |

Why not try samba? I did apt-get samba... then edited the /etc/smaba/smb.conf file to set directory permissions and now I can access and transfer all my files from/to windows workstations. A good place for samba configuration info is: http://hr.uoregon.edu/davidrl/samba-unofficial.html Just skip the first par about building from source if you use apt-get, otherwise everything else is the same. |

Post subject: | Samba and XP |
Has anyone else suffered as I have trying to get Samba and Windows XP to work together? I've been able to see the share through Neighborhood Network, but when I click on it it prompts me for a username and password. Regardless of what I put in, it never validates the u/p . I've tried using usernames on the mythbox as well as on the xp box, but no go. I've even tried to add the username I use on xp to the samba users (using smbuser or something). I've also made some registry edits that were suggested on a web page I found through a google search. I know I may be being vague, but I'm stuck at work and can't get to my specific setup right now. If anyone can give me any tips, I would greatly appreciate it! |

You have to use smbpasswd to add other users to the samba user database. $ smbpasswd -a unixname René |

and I think this is the default now, but samba has to use encrypted passwords to interop with xp. |

$ smbpasswd -a unixname René Yah, I failed to mention that I had done that also. I tried configuring it using the above link and I'm having a bit more success, but still can't get into the shared directory. I've used the smb.conf used as an example and changed the following lines: netbios name = niftyserver workgroup = WORKGROUP to netbios name = mythtv workgroup = HOME As you can guess my box is called mythtv and my internal network workgroup is HOME . To this: [pub] path = /cifs/pub guest ok = yes writeable = yes create mode = 0666 directory mode = 0777 I've added path = /myth/tv guest ok = yes writeable = yes create mode = 0666 directory mode = 0777 /myth/tv has read permissions for all. The /cifs/* directories were created as per the install instructions in the above link. I did this merely to see if I could get it to work just as it is written with the only changes made being the ones I've just mentioned. Now, when mapping a network drive under XP (using drive letter p: as per the samba.conf setting) with path \\mythtv\myth\tv I am prompted for username/password. I enter root and my linux root password and it attempts to connect to \\mythtv\myth\tv . It sits there for about 10 seconds and then says can't connect. I've disabled roaming profiles under Windows XP under group policy editor. Any thoughts? This is one of the last puzzle pieces that I need to figure out to get my system set up like I'd want it. Thanks! |
