Greg,

I have KnoppMyth R5D1 running and I did not recompile mplayer. My system has a /usr/bin/mplayer directory but does NOT have a /usr/lib/codecs directory! That contradicts what you just said.

I downloaded the essentials file and copied them:
Code:
cp -r -d -p /usr/src/essential-20060611/* /usr/local/lib/codecs

I am able to play all the video formats with mplayer now, so my belief is that I did it right. Didn't I?

Eric

if mplayer is in /usr/bin, it would have been compiled with --prefix=/usr. This means it will look for the codecs in /usr/lib/codecs. If you do not have that directory, you should create it.

Your post reminded me. I had to create the codecs directory under /usr/lib, then put them there. Sorry!

Can you use apt-get to load mplayer codecs? That's what we're talking about here.

I updated the guide to reflect this discussion to some degree.

Should I retool it to reflect a need to compile mplayer w/ the --prefix=/usr switch? I realize that the R5D1 uses mplayer1.0pre8, but at some point, a new version of mplayer will be released and I know that some KM users (myself included) don't upgrade w/ each new release.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Yes, I would add the --prefix=/usr info! These help guides are for the people who need to see the commands written out as they need to be typed. It makes perfect sense to include it, if it's necessary to make it work.

Incomplete instructions are a HUGE problem in Linux documentation, so any time you can fill in the blanks, you are a god! THANKS!

Is the h.264 codec in either of the codec packs we've discussed here?

Are there some freely downloadable h.264 test videos that can be downloaded?

Thanks,
Eric

Already answered on page 3 of this thread... Dont know if you download essential..., but I downloaded all and the answer is YES. Go to apple's site or just do a google search for h.264 sample video

With R5D1 Cesman has in the changelog he added latest version of XviD. Is that still a needed step on R5D1 if latest is included?

In my post towards the top of page 4, I said I downloaded and extracted the essentials tarball.
I guess I'm not the only one who misses information in forum posts, huh?

I did find an h264 HDTV file at:
http://www.skytimelapse.com/hidef.html
And it plays nice and smooth on my machine following the codec download/copy.

One goal is to transcode from HDTV mpeg2 to h264 for long term video storage. The MPLAYER website has documentation that suggests you can transcode with MEncoder and x264.

I see that the R5D1 changelog says that Cecil added x264. The x264 encoder? How can we utilize that?

Eric

Yes, I think we do need to load the codecs. Back on page 3 of this thread, Cesman confessed that no codecs were included with mplayer in R5D1. If left out on purpose, I can only guess that he left them out for legal or licensing issues??

Thanks for the instructions on upgrading mplayer. I have the latest version running and playing videos now, but I'm running a snag with my Hauppauge PVR-350 gray remote. The only buttons that work for me are play, pause, volume and skip. I can't fast forward, rewind, or exit mplayer. My ~/.mythtv/lircrc has the default mplayer bindings but I don't think they're being used. As far as I can tell, I can't control mplayer with the keyboard at all.

Is this a result of my mplayer upgrade? Something else?

Thanks in advance,

Boris

Try this page for the keyboard commands:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/man/en/mplayer.1.html

Scroll down to the heading: INTERACTIVE CONTROL.
