With the Cygwin instruction on this page I got things up and running with no problems. Do you have any instructions on getting Mythweb up and running? I did a search on the wikki and found some info but it didn't work for a nube like me.

This is the page I used to setup mythweb,
it worked right away on a virgin knoppmyth
installation.

Just as an FYI, someone on the wiki posted this method modified such that cygwin isn't required as the xserver. The very lean alternative is called xming and works just as well. I have updated my original guide with these instructions.

I'd encourage anyone using cygwin to nuke it (~400 megs) and replace it w/ ximg (~7 meg)! I did leave the original version of the guide intact which can be found at the bottom of the first post in this thread.

Thanks to whomever discovered xming!

Hey this HowTo is great. I'm very new to linux. But I'm having a ball figuring this mythbox stuff out. I do have a question I hope someone can help me with. It's under the
"Start an Xsession" of the walkthrough. I start xming server on my winmachine, Then I start putty, and load my mythbox session. The black putty window comes up but I don't see a place to enter my mythtbox login/password, And I am not able to type anything in the black putty box. I know this has to be something I'm just not understanding or I'm overlooking so any help would greatly be appreciated. :)

I figured it out. I had the putty port number wrong. I knew it was something stupid.

I've been trying to get this to work. I've followed the wiki and again here, but I get "cannot connect to X server localhost:10.0" I must have missed a setting in Xming or something.

I can putty into mythbox without a problem, but won't run mythfrontend.

If you are running 5E50, VNC is run as standard, so you can connect using a VNC client, which shows the current desktop (like a Windows VNC server).

Sorry, didn't mention before. R5D1 is what I'm running.

Read through it again. X11 forwarding must be enabled in putty or it won't work at all. Make sure you don't have a firewall blocking ports on your windows end. If all else fails, add a -ac switch to the shortcut for xming like this:
Code:
"C:\Program Files\Xming\Xming.exe" :0 -ac -clipboard -multiwindow

The -ac switch totally disables access control. VNC can work also.

Did some minor updates and discovered several reasons why you would want to use an xsession over VNC which I also listed in the 1st post of this thread. I hope people find it useful.

Updated the guide; WAY more simplistic now. All you have to do is double-click a shortcut and mythfronend pops up in your windows box - no ssh necessary!

Does this work with R6 as I keep getting an error when I try. I have tried the method listed here and directly through Putty but neither works.

When I try using the method here, my Xming log looks like this:
Code:

When I try via Putty it says it can't find the display 0 even though when you echo the $DISPLAY variable it says it is 10.

Any ideas?
