no there is no way other than a full mythtv frontend that I know of to actually view live full rate video. I know neither vnc or nxserver will do it. I seriously doubt you are going to find anything that will other than some sort of frontend.

You said..

Cygwin isn't connecting to my Mythbox.. I get it that the clue is in #2.. but how is that done.

This might be getting a bit into the weeds .. but I'm understanding that, in this case.. the windows box is (technically) the "server".. and the Mythbox is the "client". (whew! my head is spinning!)

Right, cygwin is install on your win32 box. You need to use putty to connect to your mythbox and you start the xsession by typing 'mythfrontend'... I don't really understand your problem. Read through the guide again and see if you can get it to work.

Got that.. I kinda figured that Putty was the pathway.. and YES.. Putty connects to my mythbox.

when I execute the Cygin batch file.. I get :

"startxwin.bat - Starting on Windows 95/98/Me
Bad command or file name"

If I start the orginal batch file.. I get a spectacular:

"startxdmcp.bat - Starting on Windows 95/98/Me"
I get a "doink" sound and "Finished - STARTX~1" appears on the window header (ahhh.. titlebar).

hmmm.. a real Xwin.log file:

It's telling you that X is already running. When you run X it will put a little "X" icon in your icon bar at the bottom right of the screen. After some period of inactivity it will go away by itself.

I got that far myself. I can run Xterm from my Myth box and see the display on my Winoze machine, but when I run mythfrontend or mythtv-setup it never opens the window on my screen.

I haven't tried to debug it too much yet since I was doing it from work. ;-)

nice one,

The thought of setting up a cygwin X server sounded like a toy for linux super villains to me not so long ago, having read this I'm surprised at how easy it is.

cheers!

You firewalled at work or behind a router at home? That could be your problem.

Hmmm.... Could be. It's a little more complicated than that. I have an IPsec VPN tunnel between the work domain and my home. I have different subnets set up so it just appears like one big internal network. I'm pretty sure all ports are forwarded without exception. But add to this the fact I recently "upgraded" (misnomer) to XP SP2 which added a "soft" firewall. I'm still figuring out this sucker. What a pain. The more I use Windoze the better I like Linux.

That's easy enough to shut off. My Network -> right click local area connections -> properties -> advanced -> settings -> off

Sorry about the delay.. it took a while for me to get back to it.
Actually, YES. because I was banging on it.. there were actually many instances of xwin running. (I just terminated them by rebooting windows! .. I had the machine running.. ummm looking for little green men with SETI/BOINC) .. Well, actually, Windows ME (the miserable edition) My reboot/retry didn't get anywhere.. unfortunate. The xwin doesn't seem to wanna connect to the live putty connection.

I'll work on this some more.. I've got some Windows 2000 machines.. and some Windows 98SE to try it out on.

Operator Error.. Got it working!!

I got PuTTY/Cygwin to work on my Windows 2000 box.. simple..

with the mythbox operating...

1. start the Cgwin/X-win session on the windows box (the "Start Xwin (.bat)" icon on the windows program menu is OK to use.)
2. start the PuTTY session on the windows box, as configured/described. (load the config settings and logon)

From the PuTTY session.. enter x-commands that you want to use.. (this is where I tripped up before.. I was executing the commands in the Cygwin term window.. that's actually just on the local PC.. not the Mythbox.. so, of course, it just said "huh?")

I usually (at least when I remember) to add a "&" at the end of each command.. and my xterm screen is available for additional x-commands.

running mythfrontend is wicked slow.. (both machines are 2+GHz Pentium 4) .. I'll suggest that you use this only under duress or desperation! if you're just setting up a recording .. use MythWeb instead!!!

This is useful for running x-programs like gedit, synaptic (user: root), mozilla .. etc.

I still have to play around some more with my Windows-ME .. a quick test did not work.. likely, I'll have to reboot the box again.. time for that .. some other time!

Best Regards!

I can do 800x600 and it's damn quick (mythtv is an athlon 1900+ and winxp machine is an 3200+).. if you use higher resolutions the speed does indeed decay.

What resolution are you running in?

I've got mythfrontend running via cygwin and X I think a little easier than described above

Prereqs

1) Cygwin with X installed (think X is there by default)
2) knoppmyth box

Steps are as follows

1) [Cygwin] $ startx
2) [cygwin] $ xhost +192.168.x.y {where 192.168.x.y is the ip of the knoppmyth box}
3) [Knoppmyth] $ DISPLAY="192.168.u.v:0"; export DISPLAY {where 192.168.u.v is the ip of your cygwin box}
4) [knoppmyth] $ xterm &

IF all worked ok you will have an xterm on the Cygwin machine...

Hope this helps someone....
