I have a couple drives sitting on my shelf. My house has 4 adults w/ 6 computers. I'm looking for an ethernet enclosure to wrap around the disk to create a network backup/share location fo the PCs

I see many cheap ones on ebay ~$50 anyone have any luck wiht these?

I'd throw them in an old PC and throw freeNAS on it.

Not sure about cheap, but I can tell you I'm very happy with my Buffalo Linkstation. I bought it at Best Buy for $100, sold the 160 it came with and put in a 250 I had lying around. It's been rock solid and is also the print server for my laser printer.

I can also tell you that you should avoid the Dlink DSM-G600 (any rev). I picked one up for $99 since it had Gigabit. Big mistake. It's slower than the Linkstations 100 Meg and is not stable at all.

I haven't tried freenas, but since I already have my mythbox running 24x7 I've been using it as my NAS. I've set aside 50GB of my existing disk space for this purpose and share it via Samba. If I remember correctly file transfers from my windows/xp box to the myth box achieve speeds of something like 80mbs - 90mbs.

My myth box has dual tuners, one HD and one SD. So far I haven't had any problems overloading the I/O subsystem by accessing the NAS storage while doing recordings on both tuner simultaneously.

One of these days I'm going to add a third drive to that box and dedicate that drive to NAS storage...

I have used FreeNAS before and works well, my only complaint is the RAID 1 and RAID 5 implementation in .671 is not stable enough for me to trust in a production box.

I tried FreeNAS and found its too young for my uses. It won't let you customize the users with uid/gid so, you end up with permission problems, using it with the myth box.

If you want a non-server NAS solution, most I've found have poor performance. The one that caught my eye is the Thecus 5200.

The reviews are excellent and the performance nice and fast!
