Does that mean I can install packages using my remote control?
Don't see this being useful for legal DVD playback, but having legal Blu-Ray/HD-DVD/WM11 would be nice.

http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS4018009574.html Linspire to offer "Click and Run" on other Linux distros including Debian. This could be a really big deal for the MythTV/KnoppMyth systems builders as could legally offer DVD and "other" codec playback in the US on pre-built MythTV boxes. And would certainly be an easy/legal work around for the DVD/codec playback issues plus appears all the apt-get goodness will remain. I vote good news.. |

I think there is more to this than people realize. If it becomes easier to commercialize MythTV, then more people will be able to justify their time and expense in contributing to the development of MythTV, KnoppMyth, and Linux-based PVRs in general. Nice guys like Cecil and Dale (and crew) will be supplimented by others who have a $$$ interest in ensuring that things work "out of the box". You can't sell a box in a store, and tell people to google on "pineapple" to get the DVD working. But what if you can include it all in the box? Or at least pre-load it with links where the end-user can pay their licensing fees and download the missing pieces? That would sell. How about a solution that can legally turn a DVD into Ipod video? Sure, you can do it all now by installing this, upgrading that, etc.. But if someone wants to sell it in stores, they'll figure out the licensing, and make it all work seamlessly. That's good for everyone. Look at all the good that Human (Dragon scripts are included in KM) has done, and extrapolate on that. Let's face it. MythTV is not yet to the point where I could recommend it to my parents. But this may bring us a step closer to that. |

Playing DVDs has nothing to do w/ MythTV's capabilities as a PVR. MythTV is the way I've watched TV for about 4 years now. Granted, I not your average computer user, I see myself as just a MythTV user. Perhaps it is me, but I don't think it is that difficult to use. The only mind bogging part is the options!

I was thinking the same thing  Of course, it remains to be seen whether or not Linspire's DVD playback solution is anything other than the illegal dvdcss library + xine + a pricetag. A DVD copying program is among the apps that you can install with Click&Run, so it seems very odd that the DVDCCA would approve of their licensee offering such a product.
I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling about the legality of this, and I'm reluctant to offer it as a solution for DVD playback. Worst-case scenario is a customer who buys a system because we say they can play DVDs, and at some point Linspire gets wiped off the map because of a lawsuit from the DVDCCA. Then the customer may lose the legal means to play DVDs. In the meantime, there are plenty of non-DVD-related features that MythTV offers. I've been watching a lot of video podcasts. |
