I know this is prolly a total noob question and unfortunately I need to be the one to ask the question - so here it is.

How the heck do I set this thing up? I go to file -> open network stream -> click the "HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS" radio button -> enter my streaming URL (mms://10.10.1.50:8001) -> click ok and I get the big nada.

Please help (I'd use WMP but cesman locked the article that people were using to troubleshoot the issue and said stop talking about it - please excuse my use here).

With VLC, I had better luck using an http stream (change the pull-down when you start the stream). Set it up just like you wrote, but use http://10.10.1.50:8001 for the url.

I never could get audio in that "other" client.

I can't seem to get anything but WMP to playback my videos I have tried all kind of different ways to get VLC to play the video instead of WMP.
Unfotunately at work we only run Windows

There is a windows version of VLC and it installed fine for me at work with a non-admin account. If you are allowed to install software, I would do that.

I got streaming working with VLC on my local network, but it doesn't work for me at work across the internet. And like many others, I too have the problem of WMP not playing audio.

Just open the stream directly in VLC ... you don't need to go through the browser. I don't have VLC directly in front of me know, but post back if you need specific instructions, and I can post them later tonight.

Where to put the URL in VLC...
File>Open Network Stream>Network>click "HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS" radio button and put the URL in the field beside.

How to change file types in Firefox...
Tools>Options>Content>Filetypes>Click "Manage"
Lemme know if it is not clear from there.

I have tried this before and never seemed to get any results here is the path I put in
mms://192.168.0.106:8001/myth/tv/1003_20070101110101.mp

Also i definetly used the method you described to change the settings for firefox and I have nothing which refers to WMP in the File types.
Everything is set to open with VLC.
Not sure why it seems to make no difference.
Thanks for the help so far

As mentioned earlier in the thread, start the stream using http, rather than mms.

In VLC, just enter the following for your url ...

http://192.168.0.106:8001

i have a 'default stream' configured in my windows vlc client. it is set to the mythstream url. so when I start vlc, it just starts playing.

settings->preferences->playlist
Default Stream 'http://<hostname>:8001
