I was wondering if anyone has gotten their xbox 260 HD-DVD drive working.

Looks like the kernel is missing version 2.5 of UDF. KnoppMyth does find the drive though.. Just can't read the discs inside the drive.

I'm also wondering if the current version of mplayer will play the vc-1 video.
Which is EVO files on the disc's.

Those EVO files are encrypted with AACS AFAIK, currently I don't think anything in Linux is going to play an encrypted EVO file unless Hollywood licenses a HD-DVD software player for Linux.

But it appears licensing HD-DVD (and Blu-Ray) software players on Windows was pretty stupid as most Windows software players have been comprised to expose keys.

I did read though that mplayer can play EVO files that are not encrypted.

I haven't made this work yet, but have been following all of the HD-DVD decrypting news @ doom9.org. From this post:

Sourceforge UDF 2.5 Patch. Apparently it's only for 2.6.16 kernels though, so beware.

I suspect it's only a matter of time before we have to install the "pineapple-HD" or maybe it'll be the "Blu-pineapple-ray"

Is there a module that we don't have to recompile the whole kernel under knoppMyth.

This existing kernel does find the hd-dvd drive, so it's working. Just missing the UDF 2.5 module.

Also, does anyone know if mplayer with KnoppMyth will play ripped EVO files.

I dont remember whether mplayer can play them "out of the box", but even if it can, it's likely to not be able to handle the x264 decoding with the regular drivers without lots of stuttering. Depends on your hardware. Although I hate to recommend non-free drivers, the coreavc drivers are really pretty great at h264, and can allow more "normal" hardware to play back smoothly.

Check this thread for more info: Updated patch for directshow filters with MythTV (for CoreAVC).

Ok... I patched the kernel for udf 2.5. Everything seems fine. I can read the disc and the directories.

I'm just testing out svn mplayer with ffmpeg parameter to see if it plays.

Just ripped the hddvd and mplayer was able to play the evo files.

I referenced the the following URL to get everything going.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Restr ... ayAndHDDVD

I also had to use the -vc ffvc1 mplayer parameter to get it displaying video.
So far sound is not working??? Maybe someone could assist.

Maybe if someone could show me how to create a deb package with the patched udf code. I would whip up a package so people could test without having to recompile the kernel and installing it.

I think it will depend on the audio format. Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD I don't think are decodable by linux drivers yet. So unless the disc has a plain Dolby Digital track on it then I don't think it will work...
Perhaps you might be able to pass the audio stream via S/PDIF but even then I don't think there are many receivers than can decode them either...

I find it funny that the MPAA is so worried about us Linux pirates stealing their "Property" (you don't own it you just pay for it).
But when it came time to make disc players for the consumers to use they were Linux boxes.
So there are Linux computers playing encrypted disks you just have to spend $500 on them.

hmm... they just announced a price cut for the Xbox 360 HD DVD player -- $179 plus a voucher for 5 free disks (from a preselected catalog of 15).

anyone get this to work without ripping the whole 30GB disk to their hard drive? it would be awesome to get support for this. can anyone point us to the forum/site that is on the cutting edge of doing this?
