Post subject:  YARD - Yet another Aspect Ratio Dimensionizer

I'm embarassed at how much trouble I have with this simple math:

If I see a spec sheet for a 17" monitor and I know that it is a 16: +/- 9 aspect ratio (1280 x 768 -- a little bit different than "16:9"...), how can I figure out the W & H? Pythagoras has got me as far as figuring out the square of the hypotenuse, but determining the two sides using ratios was impossible!

So, I became a high school student again and went online to learn about sines, cosines and tangents. Boy, the things I didn't learn when I was the right age!

So, since I didn't want to have to do that much figuring again (*that* hasn't changed since I was 17...), I wrote a quick Javascript to help me figure out how wide and how tall any diagonal dimension on a monitor works out to be -- important, as I consider whether a 17" 1280x768 is too small (it is, the great New Egg price notwithstanding).

It's ugly, but functional. If anyone else is wanting to get the same answers that I was, this is my gift to you. If my math is way off, some kind soul should let me know.

Since what you actually care about is visible area, I'd just get out a ruler and measure. Crude, low tech, inelegant, but quite effective! ;-)

well 1024x768 is the standard 4x3 aspect ratio.
