My MBE shutdown on me yesterday. I'd somehow caused it to shutdown while editing a recording. Not a big deal, but freaked me out a bit.

Today, the darn thing was off entirely. I was all ready to start believing I'd left a short in the machine even though it's been running perfectly for a couple weeks, but when I ran downstairs to restart the sbe's backend, I discovered the SBE was off too.

Weirdly, two OTHER computers in the house were perfectly fine. They'd been running all night without a problem. Not linux machines, and actually older boxes.

I'm guessing there was a power spike that the new boxes didn't like, but the old machines just ignored.

Bloody cruddy power around this neighborhood. I can't wait until I can install a Mr. Fusion in the basement and get off the grid. If anyone asks about the weird glows coming from my basement windows, I'll just smile mysteriously.

I'm a firm believer in having a UPS on any computer!

Any Myth box not running behind a UPS is on borrowed time in my opinion.

Seriously. Spend a couple weeks watching the Staples, or Office Depot, or Office Maxx, or CompUSA, or Circuit City, or ... circulars or a shopping site like http://hotdealsclub.com/cat/59/ or ... and when one of your local office supply places has these for $40 go buy 2 of them. http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getp ... a0acead4e9

It'll be the best hardware investment you ever make.

Ya know, I have an APC battery backup. I was living in my previous house, never really had power problems there, but when I put a new machine together, I decided to splurge on the battery backup. It was fine for a while.

Later, after moving, I bought a newer machine from a local computer shop. I started seeing problems. Power supplies dying. Motherboard frying. Regularly. Then last year, the darn computer would start to randomly shut down. At first once a month. Then it was several times a week.

I took it off the battery backup. My computer hasn't had a hiccup since. Well, ok it did have 2 bsod's, but it's been off the battery backup for 8 months. But the computer hasn't randomly died, and the power supply has been much happier.

Maybe it was just a run of bad power supplies. Maybe I had a less than quality battery backup. I don't know.

Hi,

I would suspect the battery is in need of replacement. Most decent ups devices do a self check (switches to battery for a few moments) on a loose schedule and if the battery is tired, well you can guess what occurs next :)

Also if the incomming power goes excessive it will switch to battery mode and that is harder to detect. Then you have fight with the electric company for a few days to have resolved.

But definetly want to use ups if you can...they are real savers!
