freeNAS supports NFS. Make sure that your freeNAS server has NFS enabled and then mount them from the front end machine. If you're not familiar with mounting NFS drives, take a look at the following references:

I've run some tests on both freenas & openfiler -- here is my brief comparison between the two:

1. Openfiler is more complex to configure then freenas.
2. Documented hardware requirements for Openfiler is p3-500mhz and 256MB RAM min. This is more freenas requires.
3a. Openfiler Samba performance is 68mb/second on a p3-500 vs. 45mb/sec with freenas.
3b. Openfiler ftp performance is a mid-blowing 92mb/sec.
4. Openfiler CPU utilization is 50% during 1GB samba transfer vs. 75% on freenas.
5. Openfiler appears to be secure and placing it outside your filerwall may be safe. Having said this, I would recomend doing more research on this before trying it.
6. Openfiler allows the extra space in the boot drive to be joined into an LVM partition. LVM is an alternative to JBOD. On freenas, the extra space on the bootdrive cannot be linked into a raid JBOD drive.
7. Openfiler does not come with an out-of-the-box UPNP server; freenas does. Having said this, I suspect you can install a UPNP package onto the openfiler install.

To have mythtv see the video files on the freeNAS box I have:
-under the NFS tab, enabled NFS, For Authorized networks set: 192.168.0.102/32 (the IP address of my mythbox)
At the bottom I see the note:The name of the exported directories are : /mnt/sharename

Dunno this should be done or not but under UPnP tab:
-enabled
Name: freenas
Content:/mnt/freenas_ad0/

Then for my mythbox I entered:
su
mkdir /mnt/myth
mount 192.168.0.102:/myth /mnt/myth

Miker, you shouldn't need upnp enabled to access your files from the myth front end. Enabling upnp would be useful if you purchased a upnp-based player like the DSM-510 / DSM-520.

I didn't think upnp was need. NFS is what I really want. The knoppmythwiki says:
Connecting to MythTV box from Linux
You will need to start portmap on the Linux machine
then code:
su
mkdir /mnt/myth
portmap
mount mythtvboxIP:/myth /mnt/myth

What is portmap?

My guess is that you don't need to execute portmap as it is probably already running. At least it is in my r5d1 system. For more info try "man portmap".

Im also running R5D1. Does this sound correct?

I have:
-under the NFS tab, enabled NFS, For Authorized networks set: 192.168.0.102/32 (the IP address of my mythbox)
At the bottom I see the note:The name of the exported directories are : /mnt/sharename

Then for my mythbox I entered:
su
mkdir /mnt/myth
mount 192.168.0.103:/FREENAS/freenas_ad0 /mnt/myth
(192.168.0.103 is the IP of Freenas)
