Hmmm. So is this magic box a DVR by itself, or is it something that MythTV could control and use as a tuner? (super-tuner, combining recorder with irblaster capability, and cable/sat box)?
Barring that, if it turns out that this IS a DVR all on its own, do we (collectively) think there's a way to have MythTV suck programs from this box via USB? Can MythTV tell it what to record?

My understanding of this device is that it takes the component HD output from a cable/satellite box, compresses it to H.264 and passes the data via USB to your computer/mythbox. How mythtv handles the USB input I do not know at this time.

I may be off-base here, but the way I read it I consider it more of a "filter" to run the component-out from your cable's STB through, the output being passed to the USB. It is not a tuner on it's own (see page 3 of the link mythedoff posted - No local storage, no tuner).

HD PVR
model # 01212
$249.00

Is there any work being done to support this under linux/mythtv?

SageTV, BeyondTV and GB-PVR all claim support. They were all provided pre-release units. I can't find anything on the web about MythTV developers given pre-release units. Seems like we will all have to wait until someone actually receives the box and then can reverse engineer the USB protocol.

Ok, so do we set up a collection to buy for one Cecil, or what?

Seems to me that getting this thing working in Myth is a pretty high priority!

Sorry for the double- flaky net today.

Although I think Cecil would appreciate a free unit, the people you'd want to hold your bake sale for are the MythTV developers.

Looking at the MythTV users mailing list archives....
http://mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-users/2008-April/thread.html#219060

Summary:
It's going to work like firewire capture, from Myth point of view. Not complicated (several said that). Just need the Linux drivers. Oops.. Happauge will not have Linux drivers initially. Maybe later. Maybe the Linux community will make better drivers anyway. Maybe Happauge will help. Maybe they would like to, but they're scared of being accused of aiding the linux/hacker underworld.... Threads drifted into paranoia...

The box should do a good job, but have to see to believe. Dedicated hardware beats larger/hotter general purpose PC (Intel/AMD) with less power/heat/cost. That's why this box can exist at all.

Combined with a SAT box or Cable box, this thing acts as a tuner, sending IR signals to change channels, delivering video (that funny number spec that I never remember) to the PC.

So, expect this to be an option in a few months, to capture component video from Cable or SAT boxes, once Happauge releases, or the linux community develops, Linux drivers. There'll be a little work to add support for MythTV, but that should be done in the MythTV core product, then it'll "just work" in KM. Although, KM may provide help by including the drivers. It should be relatively analagous to whatever was done in KM to make the HDHomeRun work.
