I'm sure most of us are aware of the rivals to MythTV I'm kinda surprised that Google Bought the Closed source Sage TV with all the Open talk they've had since Android.
Is this good for Our community or bad?

It doesn't really matter if it was closed source before, wasn't VP8 closed source when Google bought it. Now it is open as WebM.

I'm still trying to figure out what they bought? Recording is built into the drivers, scheduling google can do on it's own, did they buy a gui interface?

They bought a new way to deliver Internet video which should fix the problems of the previous GoogleTV, along with learning about your watching habits to deliver better ads.

I've been thinking this over a bit, and I think that the biggest threat is to Boxee. The Google TV box has not done very well but the "Boxee box" (by Dlink) has been well received. If this acquisition enables them to make the Google TV box more competitive, Boxee Box sales might be hurt.

Mythtv is for hobbiests / people that like DIY products - it's not a mainstream product. While this is also true for SAGETV, I doubt that Google is trying to complete for the DIY market. As such, I think this is a non-event for mythtv. If anything, it might send some of the DIY crowd that used SageTV to Myth.

I think the biggest threat to MYTH is DRM. As more operators utilize encryption to protect their content, myth becomes less useful. For the time being MYTH is fine for recording OTA content, but the options for cable or satellite are limited and diminishing.

not completly true the Ceton card http://www.cetoncorp.com/products.php
Allows us to record encrypted channels. But I like your point of view maybe we will get a bump in people since google took down the software links.

I hadn't seen that device before -- thanks for the pointer. It is promising, but I suspect that it won't work with mythtv or any other open-source system due to the DRM requirements...

Oh no that's the best part they developed the card under linux the guys from mythTVcast interviewed someone from ceton in this episode
Code:
http://tlltsarchive.org/archives/MythTVCast_Episode25.ogg

The downside is that it's $400 I'd like a $100 version that does 2 recordings. In that episode he describes how it records. Essentially it shows up in Linux as a network drive and all you are doing is pulling data over. It's cool.

Thanks for the pointer to the interview -- it was extremely informative and I now understand how this works. It is very clever and it sounds like it will have the same behavior with encrypted channels that I see when I use my Motorola DCT-6200 as a tuner via firewire -- see this articlefor more details.

Amazon is selling them for $299...
