can we all talk about this?? Snapstream seams to be a viable alternative.

There seems to be a huge user base and becuase you pay for the software and its windows based, you also have better support.

What do you guys think?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the naivete of that statement. By all means run back to the comfort and safety of the feedpens at the slaughter yard. (BTW - Yes, that's hyperbole)

If all you're looking for is an appliance go buy a Tivo or rent the settop box that you cable company offers. You should be building your own because you want to be in control of it, or want to be able to extend it's capabilities, or don't want to have your provider upload "upgrades" that disable features, or won't let you record certain shows, or monitor your viewing habits, or ... or because it's a fun project to work on. Those are certainly the reasons I built my own PVR, since when I did it was about the same $ as a Tivo with lifetime "service". Even now that the price of a Tivo has dropped like a stone (and the company may be in danger of sinking like one), I still think that building your own is the better deal.

Well, at least we're talking about this and learning about what makes my mythtv setup better and worth the headaches I went through to set it up.

I dunno, maybe if they bought the MCE ones in bulk... Still I'll agree that's an awfully low price even on E-Bay.

and a question .... anyone w/ a tivo find that it records the most retarded crap w/o asking??
80 gig drive aside .. it still boggles the mind why it would be recording infomercials at 3am :roll:

i feel that in rolling your own you have the power to do whatever you want to do w/ it and not have to worry about paying for something every year that wastes it's internal space to try and drive up ratings LOL

Haven't read the article. However, I bought my PVR-250 (not mce) for $89.99 at Circuit City last fall. Had to be patient and watch the sales. It can be done.
