So I live in this neighborhood that has fiber optic wire to each house. This sounds good but the "ISP" who runs it leaves much to be desired. Among other issues with the ISP, they do not give you access to the router's setup pages (the ISP installed the router and basically own it). It looks like the fiber wire goes into a little black box (a modem of some sort?) which then goes into a crappy Leviton router's WAN port via an ethernet wire. Please note that the Leviton router also has an Uplink port. I wanted to be able to set up hardware firewall (and other things) so I got them to give me a static IP which they DMZ to an address (192.168.0.201). They told me I can plug my own router (an SMC Barricade with wireless) into the Leviton (I assume connecting the Leviton's Uplink port to the SMC's WAN port). The ISP provided me with the following info:
The DMZ address (192.168.0.201) My Subnet address (255.255.255.0) My Gateway (192.168.0.1) My DNS adresses (207.115.64.2 and .3) I guess the idea is that the DMZ they set up for me forwards all data from the Leviton to the SMC, thus the Leviton would be basically transparent. Problem is that I cannot get my network to work that way. I don't think I'm setting up my SMC router properly. Any ideas? Thanks! |

yeah tell the lousy sob's at the isp to put their router in transparent bridge mode and f off. LOL what they are doing should work, but it's a lousy way to do it. essentially you will end up with a double NAT which works, but it's just bogus an another layer of things to go wrong. My first guess at why it's not working would be that you have your internal addresses set to 192.168.0.x as well as the external and have a subnet overlap. what ip do you get on your computer from your smc? if it's 192.168.0.? you need to adjust the router to use a different network on the LAN side. if it's not in that subnet can you ping 192.168.0.201? 192.168.0.1? |

Did you try connecting the SMC's WAN port to a regular port on the Leviton? The uplink port is crossed-over and the SMC's WAN port is expecting a normal connection (not crossover). |

Windows XP reports 192.168.2.100 as the IP from the SMC. The gateway it reports is 192.168.2.1 and the reported subnet is 255.255.255.0. I can access the SMC's set up web pages at 192.168.2.1. I just reset my SMC router to its factory defaults. How should I set it up now? I think my viable options are: Dynamic IP, PPPoe (xDSL), or Static IP Like I said before, my ISP did give me a static IP but in my situation I don't know if I should set up the SMC using the static IP. Cledus: Thanks - I'll try that once I get my SMC router setup again. |

use the static IP information your isp gave you. of course public ip would be better, even if it's dynamic, but if they gave you a static ip that's what you should use. |
