Post subject: | Why a USB Keyboard? |
I am brand new to knoppMyth. And I am still going throught the install process. Having trouble with boot after install. But that's another thread. I would like to say 2 things about why I have a USB keyboard. 1) I posted my specs for my system here and in another forumn. Nobody ever said that the keyboard would be an issue. And that's OK, I understand it is easier to overlook. 2) This was the only almost reasonable priced wireless keyboard/mouse pad combo I could find. And to me this really seems like a must for my concept of what an HTPC needs to be. So no question this time. But thanks ahead of time for all the help I will need. I am keeping a log of issues I run into during installation. When I get the thing working, I will post my suggestions somewhere. Thanks, Chris |

Fair enough ![]() I've got a USB keyboard because it's shiny, hides well under my TV unit and most importantly, it works.* Mephi *Well, for a given value of "works". It wouldn't work during the install portion of the Knoppmyth setup, so I had to use a spare PS2 one, but after that it was fine. |

I went back and read your original post, and you never actually said you had a USB keyboard. Maybe that's why we "missed" it in your message. ![]() |

True. But I did specify the manufacturer and exact model number of the keyboard. Adesso WKB-4000US (wireless keyboard with touchpad) If I knew what to specify about the hardware that would cause and issue, I would not need to ask, would I? ![]() But truly I am not compliaining. Given time I expect it to work, other posters have had sucess. |

I just realized that I acidentally started this as a new thread. I was really just trying to post to the "No USB Keyboard support on the KnoppMyth install" thread. My post would have made a litlle more sense given a bit of context. ![]() |

So edit the first post in this thread and add a link back to the original thread... ![]() BTW - You can find much less expensive keyboards with proven track records recommended around here. I've already mentioned the current IR model (under $30), and in the past have posted about the old Micro Innovations RF model (around $50). |

I did not want to pay what i did for that keyboard. But it was the only one I could find that had the touch pad and was wireless. I don't think the keyboards your speaking of have the touch pad. |

Nope. No touchpad. The RF one has a seperate mouse and the IR one has large rubber eraser type thing. There are others with trackballs, and Any particualr reason having a touchpad is such a priority? I used one really good one 15-20 years ago and haven't seen another one that was worth bothering with since... |

I use one every day. Have been for 10 ten years roughly. Use my laptop constantly and have always required it on any laptop I buy. I believe that once you fully understand how it works and how to adjust the settings, there is no better solution avaliable. When I started thinking about how I would use a keyboard with MythTV (Either in my lap in a chair or standing at the entertainment center where space would be at a premium), I decided it was a must. Also thanks to the other poster for tips on getting the keybaord working. Hopefully I will get to trying one of the work-arounds soon. Right now I am just using a normal keyboard and trying to get the MythTV installed and running. |

The USB keyboard will probably work after install. Eh? For me, it was just the install that required a PS/2 keyboard. |

For me, it was just the install that required a PS/2 keyboard. You can use a USB keyboard during install if you remove it and re-insert it when you get to the first screen. |

Thank you! I've blown out the ps2 ports on my nforce 2 board and have been using USB since then. Im finally getting around to upgrading to R5A26 and ran into the USB doesn't work during the install issue. So, I'm really glad to see the solution as I'm not sure what I'd do otherwise! -Aubrey |

Please, please, please Avoid USB! There are known issues with this with no known cure other than to replace them with a PS2 keyboard and mouse. Yes, these work for some people, but far too many others have all kinds of problems associated with them. If you ignore this advice don't be suprised to get a "We Told You So!" response when you ask questions about it in the forums. |
