Oooh, no more hardware costs but no more lifetime subscription option. $20/mo with one year prepay, $17/mo if you prepay three years!

Ouch.

This is precisely why I am not using Tivo. Twenty bucks a month is outragreous for tv listings. My basic cable doesn't even cost that much!

Let's see... Before you could get lifetime service for $300. Now you get one year for $240. Stick a fork in 'em -- they're just about done. Too bad, too. Tivo launched a revolution, but all too often the early pioneers are not the ones to survive.

I loved them. I was happy to pay my $100/yr. I figured I'd be doing it forever, to keep fueling ongoing development and service.
But then they came out with the Series2, right about the time I was buying my HDTV. I called them up and asked if they had plans, other than the DirecTivo. No, couldn't/wouldn't say. Hedging around things like "uncertain standards" and "can't possibly work on every cable system". Huh? QAM? ATSC? CableCard? Geez. It became clear that they were spending my money on attracting customers who were way behind the curve, and left all the early adopters out to dry. Hi guys! :D
So I decided to learn/support this avenue instead. Looks like a winner. After I get it all figured out, I'll probably start contributing code. Or I'll punch a few PayPal buttons when my Tivo sub comes up for renewal in June and I cancel the bugger.
