I want to be able to play Real Media files in Mplayer/MythVideo.

I've downloaded the Mplayer source and essential codecs package and had a look at the README's and ./configure--help options. However there are millions of things to enable/disable and I don't want to lose/disturb anything, I just want to add RM support.

Do I need to change the default installation path?

The pamphlet says that Mplayer is compiled for "run time CPU detection"....is this something I need to take care of?

2nd: I gather that when Mplayer compiles it gets the codecs from /usr/local/lib/codecs. So do i just move the "essential codecs" folder to this location?

Am I going about this the right way?

Try following this excellent guide.

The XviD and other codecs aren't needed for RM.
