It may seem like a stupid question, but I've actually done this. You don't have the sound turned off in the bios do you?

I don't know if this may be related, but I thought I would pass it on as something to look at.

I have had a problem with sound, as I have two sound devices, my SC and a Webcam with a microphone. After the inital install alsamixer won't run, so I need to fix this.

How I fix is to create the file /etc/modprobe.d/sound and in that I put this:
Code:
options snd-emu10k1 index=0
options snd-usb-audio index=1

Now obviously for you, you would have to replace snd-emu10k1 with your module for sound, intel8x0 I think. After creating this file reboot and I am then able to run alsamixer.

Worth a try.
