Hello everyone, i have been trying to install knoppmyth on my pc so i can use it instead of Win MCE for media etc but have been having some problems. It wouldn't let me do an auto install because when i get to the enter user-password and confirm user-password boxes it wouldn't let me enter anything (having entered username etc fine). I could select any of the other options (help/next/previous etc) just not the text box to enter the password. Obviously when i pressed next with 2 blank passwords it wouldn't let me continue. I read up and thought maybe i had to do a manual install, tried one of these, which i finally got working (mainly my stupidity i think!) until i got to the point it wanted the user-password and confirmation again and it wouldn't let me enter it again. So now i'm stuck, same problem on both auto and manual installs, most of the listed problems seem to be either unrelated or to do with SATA drives, mine is an IDE.

Any help would be really really appreciated, i have a feeling i'm just being really really stupid!!

When the source is open, the possibilities are endless!

It is letting you enter the username and password, it just doesn't show you anything. It doesn't show stars or anything. just type the password it really is taking it. Any other problems could be because of bad burn.

deshg: You do realise that the password is not echoed? When the prompt is displayed, just type the password and press enter. Then do it again.

Okay i win the prize for being the biggest monkey in the world, it actually was something as simple as the password not coming up and me not realising. You'd think a Computer Science BSc would have at least taught me to work that one out wouldn't you?! Thank you all so so much for your help, i apologise for being such a complete moron, no doubt it won't stop here!
