I tried to follow theHowTo to switch to xfs file system, but I got an error.

Quote:
root@mythtv:/# tar cvvpPf /tmp/cache.tar /cache
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 2006-01-15 23:07:10 /cache/
drwx------ root/root 0 2006-01-15 17:59:26 /cache/lost+found/
drwxrwxr-x mythtv/mythtv 0 2006-01-19 08:14:49 /cache/cache/
-rw-r--r-- mythtv/mythtv 8962568192 2006-01-20 08:14:09 /cache/cache/ringbuf1.nuv
tar: /tmp/cache.tar: Wrote only 8192 of 10240 bytes
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

What can I do? Can I delete ringbuf1.nuv?

Why do you even need to worry about backing up /cache? The only thing that exists in it is the ringbuffer and that is deleted and recreated when you switch channels.

cesman : I don't worry about backing up cache. I'm just a good pupil who is doing his homework. Because I'm newbie, I did what it's written in the HowTo.
So I can delete the ringbuf1.nuv ..

The file should normally be deleted when you stop watching "live" TV. It's 100% expendable.

Maybe he forgot to shut down the frontend?
OP: you don't have to worry about the contents of the cache.

I can't umount /myth.
It says :
Quote:
umount: /myth: device is busy

I have stopped, frontend, backend, samba, nfs (which i didn't know it was running).

What do I do wrong?

Have you got an active shell session using that directory? The fuser command should show you who is using that partiton...
Code:
fuser -vm /myth

ok I broke my installation :(.
So I have to reinstall. Something strange. I made tar files. I tried to umount. I didn't work. So I restarted. Because I made the tar files before , I didn't use the syntax again, I was sure tar files were in tmp directory. So I unmounted partitions , switch to xfs and re mounted the partitions, but tar files were not there anymore.

I maybe missed something somewhere.
So let's re-begin.

Uhm... You do realize that when you change the filesystem type for a partition you are essentiallly reformating it and deleting everything on it right? You have to play "the fox, the goose, and the bag of beans" with any data that you want ot keep.

tjc : Yes I do :-)
But I made tar files before rebooting. I don't know why files were not in /tmp anymore. It's not dramatic because I had no data stored on the mediacenter yet.

Totally not in the thread but I'm not english fluent and even if I think I catch the sense of the expression

Can you help me to be sure I'm right?
You mean , I have to check and check again? right? the fox eats the goose who wants to eat beans? Am I right?

It's an old puzzle story. You need to cross a river with a fox, a goose, and a bag of beans but the boat will only hold you and one of the other three at a time. if you leave them alone together the goose witll eat the beans, or the fox will eat the goose... It's a classic puzzle, so I'm sure you've heard it in some other form...

The intent was that you've got to transfer things back and forth so you don't lose them.
