Hi all... I've been playing with knoppmyth for a few weeks now - the current release on the site as of March 1 06. Twice I have had it working A-OK and blew it up trying to install some games. I would much like to use apt to pull the packages and install them, but EVERY time I try to I get the following situation:

root@PVR-MythTV:/usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples # apt-get install liquidwar
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
e2fslibs e2fsprogs liballegro4.1 libasound2 libblkid1 libc6 libc6-dev libss2
libuuid1 libx11-6 libxext6 libxxf86dga1 libxxf86vm1 liquidwar-data
liquidwar-server lsb-base x11-common xfree86-common
Suggested packages:
e2fsck-static liballegro4.1-plugin-esd liballegro4.1-plugin-arts glibc-doc
x-window-system x-window-system-core twm x-window-manager
The following packages will be REMOVED:
libasound2-dev locales
The following NEW packages will be installed:
e2fslibs liballegro4.1 libss2 libuuid1 libx11-6 libxext6 libxxf86dga1
libxxf86vm1 liquidwar-server lsb-base x11-common
The following packages will be upgraded:
e2fsprogs libasound2 libblkid1 libc6 libc6-dev liquidwar liquidwar-data
xfree86-common
8 upgraded, 11 newly installed, 2 to remove and 535 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/14.9MB of archives.
After unpacking 2367kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] Y
E: This installation run will require temporarily removing the essential package e2fsprogs due to a Conflicts/Pre-Depends loop. This is often bad, but if you really want to do it, activate the APT::Force-LoopBreak option.
E: Internal Error, Could not early remove e2fsprogs

I tried using the force loopbreak option and, as can be expected, this horribly broke it - in fact, I had to do a low level format of the HD before the machine could even boot to the knoppmyth installer. Am I doing something wrong by trying to use apt to pull the games? I suppose I can install from source or something along those lines, but there are a bunch of games I'd like to get an this would be a very long process. Can someone offer any suggestions? I don't even know why this package is here and causing me problems in the first place! Thanks for any suggestions.

You're a victim of drift, the debian stuff has moved a long way from the versions being used on the CD. Doing an apt-get is very hazardous at the moment as a result. The best move for now is to avoid it.

So is my only option to install from source? Should i look for .deb packages instead? What is the recommended method right now?
