I am building my first PVR, and I booted from the Knoppmyth CD I created, once it detects all the devices it brings up a menu with 6 options. When I click on Manual install and get to the part where it asks to partition or quit, I click on partition and it shows my brand new hitachi 160 gb HD. Once I click on the drive and hit enter it brings up a message that says "opened disk read only, you have no permission to write" when I hit return after the error message it says "Fatal error: cannot get disk size, press any key to exit cfdisk". What is going on? I have never worked with linux before, why can I see the HD but not partition it. The drive is new out of the box, do I need to do anything to it before partitioning with Knoppmyth. Please help!!
Thank you for any help, I am trying to learn.

Hi cjspradlin,
I think you will need to offer more information before getting any words of wisdom.
What version of KnoppMyth?
Serial or IDE?
At little about your hardware also, processor speed, etc
Any reason for not just trying auto install? Since you are a little new to KnoppMyth, it would be my suggested way of trying for the first time(s).
Also you try an earlier version if you are currently trying the B, maybe go for the A26, or A30? You can always upgrade.

Mike,
Thank you for your reply, however I resolved the problem. I am using the R5B7 version. It is one of those solutions so simple you don't know how you overlooked it. When it lists the HD to partition there is a little box [] next to the name, I didn't press the spacebar to check that before pressing enter.
I was able to install sucessfully, however I am now running into another problem. I have a Linksys WMP54G pci card, however it does not appear that Knoppmyth installed the driver for it. I am not familiar with Linux, and it is appears to have a very large learning curve. It reminds me of DOS only 10 times more complex. Back to the problem, what do I do to resolve it in a simple manner as I am new to Linux. I believe that is the only thing stopping me from having an operational system.
Thanks again.

Hi cjspradlin,
Good show, You were a bit vague earlier so was difficult to offer suggestions. As for the wireless, you will need to search the forum a little as I use hardwire. You don't require network to make the system work but there is "stuff" that won't work with out it. Also there will be a delay at boot time as it has to do a network time out to continue, about a minute, two at the most. If you could use hardwire to start, that would be wise as then you can get everything going first then change over to wireless if needed.
What are planning for a tuner card?

One of the fine gentlemen here on the forum posted this awhile back, big help. I forget who for sure, maybe Liv2Code?

Cecil has asked that we please keep it to one topic per thread. If the original problem is solved, the wifi question deserves it's own thread.
There is a known issue with R5B7 setting up certain wifi cards (those based on certain chipset) out of the box. Several folks have posted solutions including the one someone supplied in my R5B7 upgrade hints thread. Searching for "R5B7" and "wifi" should turn the information up very quickly.

Thank you for the help. I will remember to keep one topic per thread in the future, sorry about that.

wow, thanks cjs for asking the question.... I was also stuck at the same point and didn't know the space bar came into play at the partition screen. Now I am at least a little further into my first attempt.
Thanks.
