New install won't boot

Post subject:  New install won't boot
I've just installed the lastest knoppmyth trying both automatic and manual installs. The installs seem to run fine, but when I reboot, nothing happens. The bios tries to boot the CD which I have removed, then it does nothing.

As a sanity check, I FDISKed and formated the hard drive in DOS. After that, It boots happily.

Any ideas or things to check?

If it's still trying to boot from cd check your boot sequence in your BIOS

It was a lilo issue.

I had to comment out the second line in my lilo config file. I'm not sure exactly what the problem was, as I didn't understand what I was doing. Still, it worked afterwards.

Hey Mmaaattt can you explain in detail how to edit that lilo file? I am ~new to linux and would like a detail instructions. I think I am having the same problem you did and would like to try your solution.

Hi,

One very elementry item to check is the boot flag on the hard drive. Boot with the cd and at the menu, quit. That should give you a prompt.. enter cfdisk /dev/hda (must be hda to boot, jumper on drive is set on master?)
When cfdisk opens up, the partition hda1 (auto installed) should be set to bootable. If not do so, then write (yes) then quit and press reset.

Assuming, no boot meaning no operating system found. Also assuming ide drive, sata is a different can of worms :)

It is fixed now thanks. It was an old maxtor drive that had an odd pin config for running as single slave. I spotted in my bios that it was coming up as the slave drive.

Not to be mean, but that is called out explicitly in the troubleshooting page I pointed MMaatttt to in the second posting in this thread. The third bullet point is:

(PATA) Check how/where your BIOS sees the drives. You should be installing to and booting off of your primary master IDE drive.

Please people, we spend a lot of time writing troubleshooting guides, HOW-TOs, FAQs and the like, and publishing references to them, with the intent that folks would have to work really hard to not find them. Don't make it all a waste of time by ignoring the information when it's handed to you. :cry:
