my permissions on the drive are:

Any ideas on what is wrong and how to solve it?

Look at the permissions on the real device (/dev/dvd is just a symbolic link), in your case:
Code:
ls -l /dev/hdd

Also, is there really a DVD burner attached as your IDE secondary slave? Check in you BIOS. The scripts that automatically set these links up are only so clever and can be fooled by multiple optical drives.

OK. I did the following. Removed 2nd optical disk (CD), made DVDRW primary and only drive. Drive shows up in BIOS as Plextor PX750 DVDR.

Code:
mythtv@mythtv:~$ ls -l /dev/dvd
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom 8 Sep 14 12:52 /dev/dvd -> /dev/hdd
mythtv@mythtv:~$ ls -l /dev/hdd
brwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom 22, 64 May  7  2004 /dev/hdd

after dvdauthoring finishes I get this error now.
Code:
2006-09-24 12:46:19 Burning ISO image to /dev/dvd

Looks like it is trying to open the drive as read only... not good. Any suggestions?

Well, it sounds like you rearranged your hardware but left the symlink pointing off to nowhere. Try rerunning the cd_link.sh script as root with your new hardware configuration.

I am new to this, so I appreciate your help...

I ran the cd_link.sh script and it ran ok.

I am getting a new error, so I must be getting closer to the correct answer.

Code:
2006-09-24 14:16:07 Burning ISO image to /dev/dvd
2006-09-24 14:16:22 ERROR: Retrying to start growisofs after reload.

Is this permission a problem?

Retrying this daunting task...

The .iso file was created correctly, but when trying to write to the DVD this is what I got.

Code:
Burning ISO image to /dev/dvd
Executing 'mkisofs -dvd-video -V MythTV BurnDVD /myth/tmp/work/dvd | builtin_dd of=/dev/dvd obs=32k seek=0'
:-[ PERFORM OPC failed with SK=3h/ASC=73h/ACQ=03h]: Input/output error
mkisofs: Broken pipe. cannot fwrite 2048*2
ERROR: Retrying to start growisofs after reload.

:-[ PERFORM OPC failed with SK=3h/ASC=73h/ACQ=03h]: Input/output error
mkisofs: Broken pipe. cannot fwrite 2048*2

ERROR: Failed while running growisofs
Result 34048, Command was: growisofs -use-the-force-luke -Z /dev/dvd -dvd-video -V 'MythTV BurnDVD' /myth/tmp/work/dvd

How can I fix this access to the DVD..?

I am having exactly the same problem as you.

Did you manage to find a solution?

I did a clean autoinstall of R5F1 and get the ERROR below when trying to burn a dual-layer DVD. I can burn a single layer OK.
Quote:
2007-08-01 22:13:24 Burning ISO image to /dev/dvd
2007-08-01 22:13:25 ERROR: Retrying to start growisofs after reload.
2007-08-01 22:13:50 ------------------------------------------------------------
2007-08-01 22:13:50 ERROR: Failed while running growisofs
2007-08-01 22:13:50 Result 39936, Command was: growisofs -Z /dev/dvd -dvd-video -V 'MythTV BurnDVD' /myth/tmp/work/dvd

Notice that it failed after 1 second. I have 200GB as HDA, DVD burner as HDC and 500GB SDA. I do admit that the project is a very full DVD.
Quote:
root@myth19kirt:/etc/init.d# ls -l /dev/hdc
brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 22, 0 Aug 2 08:05 /dev/hdc
root@myth19kirt:/etc/init.d# ls -l /dev/dvd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Aug 2 08:05 /dev/dvd -> hdc

I am going to try to burn a dual layer with less than 80% in use, compact dvd menu and see if that works. Maybe the project just GROWS to big beyond my selected recordings.

I've had a very similar problem for several days, that left many forehead prints on my screen - one of those old CRT monitors (think Bang Bang Bang).

My situation was that MythArchive would build the DVD structure, but fail whenever it tried to write the DVD. The Error message looked like it didn't have write access to the DVD drive.

The error is actually a configuration problem. In "Utilities/Setup | Setup | Media Settings | Archive Files Settings | Location of DVD" it was listed at "/dev/dvd/" instead of "/dev/dvd" - The trailing slash is was caused the error.

Hope this helps someone else prevent bruises above the eyebrows.
