Post subject:  setting default volumes...

Hello all. I start my installation and the screen freezes at the setting default volumes step. Any ideas on what that could mean? I'm downloading the install disk over again in case it was a bad install. This is version R5D1.

Thanks!

Come on guys, search before you start a new topic. There are already at least a half dozen active threads on this, and at least one with the same title. Some (like the last one) with successful work arounds.

For your information, I read all of those, and none seemed to deal with the same hardware as I had.

I had an intel D845GRG mb, it has ac97 type sound.

Always locked up at "Setting default volumes"

I disabled the onboard soundcard and Voila! it boots.
I picked up a cheap PCI yamahaXG ymf724f card today, will install that tonight.

Somebody mentioned doing something with HOTPLUG to turn off the conflicting driver, but I dont know how to do that on a burned install CD...
Id rather have the onboard sound working, but im not going to spend hours hacking around to do so.

It's a lot easier to get better answers if you provide details like this up front.
