Post subject:  digital camcorder input

My 2ghz pc has a pvr-350 and a four port firewire card running R5D1. The whole setup is working pretty smooth now so of course I want to upset the boat.

I'd like to occasionally import my digital camcorder movies into the system via the firewire card. I'm not even sure what my first step would be to do this. Can someone get me started?

Secondly I'm considering another tuner, probably a second pvr-350. I don't use HDTV whatsoever and I have standard analog cable. Should I consider buying an external firewire cable controller instead? Would there be any benefit to this instead of going with hardware I know and have?

Thanks,

Abby

I posted something along these lines on mythtv-users

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/m ... er;#233799

And look at linux editing software

http://lives.sourceforge.net/

Myth plays the big AVIs I moved from XP, but I have not tried to use linux to make AVIs from my Mythbox yet. There is no mythtv integrated inport option AFAIK.

And I doubt external firewire is as good as normal connections on your mobo or PCI. I think USB is slower, but 2.0 may be close.

If you just want to import it, dvgrab should do it:

http://www.linuxcommand.org/man_pages/dvgrab1.html

If you want editing tools too, check out:

http://www.kinodv.org/

I think they are both apt-get'able.

Note: I haven't used either of these, but did a search as I was interested in knowing what digital video camera support was like. Let us know what works.

you wont need a 350 as you dont need a second output. a 250, 150 or even the dual tuner 500 are more what you most likely want.

I just want to grab the video off the camcorder. I'm not into editting whatsoever. (It takes so much time and I want to have a life.)

Regarding the choice for a second tuner... I think buying a second pvr-350 opens options for me in the future if the kids want to watch movies in another room (i.e. maybe I'll build a frontend for them).

Thanks,

Abby

Post subject:  Stay away from the 500

The current generation of 500s have a tuner problem.

Maybe the linux driver will catch up, but even after a patched kernel and new ivtv driver the quality stinks.

They changed the hardware specs (new samsung tuner) but did not change the model number, and it screwed a lot of people (including me).

Hi,

I recently helped a friend rebuild his setup with a 350 & 2 150's. So far he is a happy camper with remote fe's all over the house. Even his wife and kids are hooked :)

The last turning point for them was after a lightning storm took out half of his electrial system a few weeks ago. They were without KM for a few days while replacing lots of smoldering hardware.

Of course the rebuild was "bigger & better" using R5D1 and the icing was adding XMRadio.

If the camera has an adapter to give composite video, then simply use that input. I just add it as channel 1 and use source of Video. Then you can use your browser to setup a record on channel 1 for x minutes. If you over estimate # of minutes, simply stop record while watching the "show".
