I'm am fairly new to linux and would like to upgrade the desktop so that I can have more GUI features since i know very little about the command line. I would like to add KDE, systems tools, firefox browser, open office, etc.... I googled and read about the apt-get function but is there a more user friendly GUI program that I can get to add/remove programs.
Thanks

Synaptic would probably be your best bet.

I got from a page from google
apt-get install synaptic
Now I'm going to install all the other programs I wanted.

Reminds me of that joke:
What a Redneck's last words?
"Hey Y'all, watch this!"

You'll find that the first thing you want to get working well is tjc's backup/restore scripts.

Now that you've been warned.....
I myself, DO VERY MUCH PREFER FireFox over MythBrowser.
It's faster. It's better. It's easier to navigate, especially witih a keyboard.
It's not tied to the frontend, so you can pause a show, call it up, then flip back. Alt+tab to switch windows (i.e. mythfrontend and firefox).
I have bound the alt+w key (w for www) so that I can call up a new instance of firefox (if it isn't running). Here's how:

in this file: /etc/X11/fluxbox/keys
add this line:
Code:
Mod1 w :ExecCommand /myth/firefox/firefox &

Follow the wiki writeup on firefox, for installing.

Now you can pause a show, press alt+w and call up FireFox, look up the show in IMDB, and smugly answer "Oh yes that IS the blind guy's partner from 'Blind Justice'".
(Bad example - never, ever, pause '24' for anything).

BTW, be sure to set a "home page" tab group for your frequent sites. Local weather, IMDB, Wikipedia, Google. Just have 'em all come up. If you're at your TV, and want to browser the web, chances are it's one of those sites that you're looking for.

Also, btw, apt-get is probably all you need for installing most packages.

Indeed. I should probably have warned him instead of just answering the question....
