Post subject: | R5E50 Installation CD hangs after Boot screen |
I'm hoping someone out there can help with a frustrating problem I'm having. When I boot off my R5E50 CD to install KnoppMyth, I get the initial boot screen. When I press enter, the HDD LED flashes twice and then after a few seconds it stays on solid and the machine hangs. It won't even respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL. I have tried using all of the flags to disable hardware detection (noacpi, noagp etc.) but none of that has helped. It won't even boot with the TESTCD option. It will boot and run with the MEMTEST option though. I've tried booting off an old copy of R5A22 and that boots fine. I can even install KnoppMyth from it and it works flawlessly. I've checked the MD5Sum of the ISO file and it checks out. I've burned the CD on the same DVD writer I am using to boot the CD. I verified the CD with NERO during the burn and it verified successfully. I haven't tried booting the CD on another machine, but I don't think it's a hardware issue, as R5A22 boots. I've read posts on other threads about disabling ACPI in the BIOS, but my motherboard (Intel D865PERL) doesn't give me the option to turn it off. If anyone has any ideas on how I can get this to work, I would appreciate the help. |

Have you tried burning another CD on different blanks? |

bruce_s01: Not yet. Downloading as we speak. (Grabbing a few different ones.) tjc: I'm using Verbatim blanks and the CD verifies OK after burning, on the same drive as I boot from (Pioneer DVR-105). I will try another blank and get back to you. By the way, by R5A22 disk is also a Verbatim disk, from the same spindle as the R5E50 disk. |

I've yet to find a brand that gives me 100% perfect CDs, and the IT guys at work told me about the same thing when I asked for recommendations. If you 're below 1 in 20 being anywhere from not-quite right to a total coaster it's a good brand. ![]() I wouldn't want to bet that this is your problem, but it's a realitively cheap thing to try. |

O.K. I've tried a whole bunch of stuff and here is the deal. R5A22 : Installs and runs. R5D1 : Installs but hangs on first boot. No LILO prompt or anything, just a blinking cursor. R5E50 : CD boots to an all yellow screen (No KnoppMyth splash screen) with the boot prompt down the bottom. I hit enter and I get the "Loading Kernal" and "Loading initrd.img" progress bars. The screen clears, the HDD LED flashes briefly twice, wait 20 seconds and then the HDD LED comes on solid and the machine has hung. A flash of inspiration hit me yesterday and I download and installed the latest BIOS from Intel. After that: R5E50 : CD boots to an all yellow screen (No KnoppMyth splash screen) with the boot prompt down the bottom. I hit enter and I get the "Loading Kernal" and "Loading initrd.img" progress bars. The screen clears and I get the following line at the top of the screen: intel_rng: FWH not found. The HDD LED flashes briefly twice, wait 20 seconds and then the HDD LED comes on solid and the machine has hung. I've tested the media on several machines and it works. It only seems to be this machine. I've installed Fedora Core 6 to see if it is a Linux thing and it installs and runs beautifully. I suppose I could install MythTV and everything else from scratch, but that will take me about 2 weeks to get it going properly, and I don't have that kind of time. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm starting to think this motherboard was a bad idea. Finally found the problem. The mobo has a SATA controller on board. Even though I didn't have any drives connected to it, I had to disable it in the BIOS to get Knoppmyth to boot. Thanks for the suggestions guys. |
