Post subject:  Multiboot frontend upgrade

I have recently upgrade to R5E30, and have a second PC that I occasionally use as a frontend. The PC is set to tripleboot WinXP, Ubuntu, and KM R5D1. with each OS getting its own partition. The Bootloader is Grub from the Ubuntu partition.

Sorry if this has been covered before, but does anyone have tips for upgrading the KM partition without messing-up the other partitions or grub?

Thanks,

Joe

Hi,

First thing is do a backup, copy files that you want to save into a safe place, maybe make a directory in /myth for storage. Write down the hostname!

Just do a manual install and when it ask where to put the boot loader mark PARTITION. When it finishes, it will exit you to a prompt. do an ls /boot and write down the vmlinuz-2.6.1x-chw-x (replace x with your numbers) Reboot

At the grub menu, you can manually edit your KM link or just open up Ubuntu and edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst (as sudo) Fix the numbers using the info that you just wrote down at install :)

When you boot into the R5E50, it will not know that you have a /myth partition so you have to go through most of the setup stuff. I simply esc out of the two setup screens but do answer the other questions properly.

Once the myth mainmenu comes up, open an xterm and fix /etc/fstab to be /myth and remove the no from noauto. Mine looks like this:
/dev/hda8 /myth ext3 auto,users,exec 0 0
Once the fstab is right , check the hostname. If it isn't right, things aren't happy and KM doesn't even know what language you use.
# mount /myth
# mythrestore
# reboot
Should only need your personnel special tweaks

Sounds reasonable. I'll see if I can give it a try over the weekend.

Nice write up Mike. You shouldn't have to manually run mythrestore. Simply go to the xterm that is asking for your root password, enter it and follow the steps.

Hi Cecil,

When you do a manual install (read as manual upgrade) the fstab is not mapped properly. It will make an entry for the partition however is generic. Therefore you have to "adjust" the fstab a little and manually mount the /myth the first time. once mounted and restored.. good to go.

You can't mount the /myth to early in the process as the setup hasn't run and created those files and directories which also include /myth . It is not really a pain as how often do most folks sit around doing manual installs once or twice a night :)

If there is a better way, I would like to try, might save me a minute or two. Besides, when I think manual, it is either 3 on the column or 4 on the floor. That means a little more work but puts the "thrill" back into driving :)

And thanks, I have help from one of my co-workers. He is trying to learn linux as time permits so when I do a post I try to present it as if helping him which in turn, helps me.

Mike
