I build a new system tonight and I've spend the past 5 hours trying to get the stupid Nvidia drivers for the Geforce 7950GT I bought to work. The only way I can get x started is if I load it as a frontend system from the cd with the 'failsafe' option. Does anyone have a copy of the failsafe xorg.conf so I can at least the the gui up when installed as a combo front/backend system?

Has anyone had experience with this card? I tried installing the latest version of the nvidia drivers (including kernel recompile) but all I got then was a flicker of an nvidia logo and blackness.

It could be your modelines are incorrect.
Can you access your box through ssh? If you can, have a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what X is doing.

Thanks for the response Bruce. I got a good nights sleep and started over.

This is how I got it to work:

Install fresh on the hard drive, default settings

On Reboot I got a completely black screen that I couldn't CTRL-ATL-F2, or CTRL-ATL-BKSPC out of

I then followed a combination of the instructions at

http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BlackScreenAfterInstall

On reboot, I held down the left shift key after POST and typed

Code:
linux init=/bin/sh

I was already logged in and everything seemed to be mounted so I then typed

Code:
install-nvidia-debian.sh 1.0-8776 -force

and on rebooted everything worked! Did a happy dance and then proceeded to debug my audio problems.
