Post subject: | IOGear USB to Serial Cause Lockup on Boot |
I have a fully functioning R5F27 installation with four tuners. However I need two serial ports and only have one. I got a IOGear GUC232A USB to Serial Adapter and when I plug it in and reboot I get an error saying: FATAL: Error inserting Cx88_dvb (/lib/modules/2.6.19_chw-13/kernel/drivers/medium/video/cs88_dvb.ko): No such device) Done and then the boot hangs on: Loading modules: usbcore echi_hcd uhci_hcd ohci_hvd usb_storage If i unplug the adapter and reboot everything is fine. Would anyone have an idea why plugging in the adapter would cause an error with the capture cards loading and why it hangs? |

The cx88_dvb error is "normal" and harmless. Your problem is the hanging in the USB setup. Is there anything in the logs when this happens? |

I grep'd all the files in the /var/log directory and could not find any errors including the "FATAL" message I mentioned and that you said was harmless. Also, the "FATAL" message does not appear when a successful boot without the usb/serial adapter is done. Is there a specific message I should be looking for? Thanks! |

If you plug in the USB adapter AFTER the boot completes does it lockup? Does the CX88 error look like this When I watch the boot I see the error flash but I looked through my logs for something to cut-and-paste for you but I can't find the 'error' in my logs either. maybe the error is just going to stderr and is not being logged. When the system boots successfully, it's just not there long enough to be noticed. What is being plugged into the Serial Adapter? |

Actually it does NOT lockup. This is from kern.log: Sep 18 06:52:26 mythtv kernel: ohci_hcd 0000:00:0b.1: wakeup Sep 18 06:52:27 mythtv kernel: usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2 Sep 18 06:52:27 mythtv kernel: usb 3-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Sep 18 06:52:27 mythtv kernel: usbcore: registered new driver usbserial Sep 18 06:52:27 mythtv kernel: drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c: USB Serial support registered for generic Sep 18 06:52:27 mythtv kernel: usbcore: registered new driver usbserial_generic Sep 18 06:52:27 mythtv kernel: drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c: USB Serial Driver core Sep 18 06:52:27 mythtv kernel: drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c: USB Serial support registered for pl2303 Sep 18 06:52:27 mythtv kernel: pl2303 3-1:1.0: pl2303 converter detected Sep 18 06:52:27 mythtv kernel: usb 3-1: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0 Sep 18 06:52:27 mythtv kernel: usbcore: registered new driver pl2303 Sep 18 06:52:27 mythtv kernel: drivers/usb/serial/pl2303.c: Prolific PL2303 USB to serial adaptor driver And my error does look like the message in the link. The serial port has a dual head IR blaster that otherwise works fine. Thanks! |

OK...well after several tries I've gotten it to work. On an occasional reboot it still locks up but if I try again (and maybe again) it works. Hmmm....don't know why the inconsistency but I'm ok with it right now. Thanks for your help and consideration. |
