I installed firefox 2.0.0.7 from tar; and I also tried installing with apt-get install firefox.

In both cases when I link firefox to mythweb and attempt to execute I get no response.

When I execute firefox from a command window (CTRL-ALT-F1) I get:
(firefox-bin:4603): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

And when I execute firefox from an x-terminal window (ALT-X) I get:
(firefox-bin:5025): ~~invalid type 'GtkMenu' for value type 'GtkWidget'

I'd appreciate any thoughts on what this means and how to fix it.

Hi,

apt-get install firefox works also. It actually installs iceweasle but at an xterm you can start it with firefox.

About the only thing I have found that has big issues is openoffice. The java stuff and a man page fail.

I installed sun java and it worked flawlessly.
"apt-cache search java|grep sun" will get you the package names. The jre is what you'll want unless you want an sdk.

I'd expect that. Use Alt+X instead, or better yet, bind a fluxbox key.
i.e. in /etc/X11/fluxbox/keys, put this:
Code:
Mod1 w :ExecCommand /myth/firefox/firefox &

Then you can press Alt+W, (w for web) and bring up FireFox.

Of course, now that I read your full post, I see that it doesn't work from X either.. But it should, and when you do, I recommend starting it this way.
BTW, I think I did:
Code:
apt-get install mozilla-firefox

Hi,

Don't mean to bend the theme here but yes, you can install sun-java5-jre & plugins BUT it is not what ooffice package wants and the install fails. Worthy of note is that if you run ooffice it does in fact work even if it has failed the install.

If you delete the offending debs and manually dpkg -i the remaining oo debs it works. I don't know if oo is then using the good java install. It is also a pain to get the apt-get cleaned up after to do any future installs.

Interestingly, apt-get does not show a need for updates or upgrades when going for openoffice.org.

Hi,

You have to run gui apps as mythtv. or as sudo if you need root power.

alt x then firefox

the alt w key won't work until you restart the xserver (ctl+alt+bksp) actually the frontend I think would work but is just easier my way :)
