I forget what knoppmyth I have (/etc/debian_version says lenny/sid).

In order to attempt to get schedules direct working, I upgraded to mythtv 0.20.2. I had to do an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to even get to that point though.

Now the xserver doesn't want to start up. No X logs of any kind in /var/log.

root@mythbox:~# xinit
xinit: Server error.

not terribly helpful!

I recall something during the upgrade process that said the latest unstable may hork your xserver but I can't remember the command (dpkg-reconfigure?) it said to run in that event.

Thansk,

Dave

hadn't noticed this before. this is odd:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Oct 21 21:55 /etc/X11/X -> /bin/true

hmm, apt or dpkg must have given up.

well heck, I might as well take drastic action. I'll try 'apt-get install xorg'. i have no idea whether xorg plays nice with knoppmyth but I have nothing to lose at this point (xfree isn't working).

i'll keep you all posted. if this fails the next step is to start from a fresh knopp myth install of the latest version.

As you stated you originally had a KnoppMyth installation (more /etc/KnoppMyth-version should reveal the version) I wonder if you have considered an upgrade to the latest version? See http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16384 for information/hurdles/etc.

There aren't a lot of details in your posts as to what you started with and where you are ultimately trying to go.

A quick search in here turned up this thread.
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16178

I know many people took that route to getting Sd up on their Knoppmyth boxes.

That was ay to much code for me, I hesitate if I can't understand what the steps are doing.
Anyway by the time I got to my box and drastically needing the SD update, (Zap2it) data was gone, this group had published the next release R5F27.

It just worked for the SD portion and TJC and the crew posted a really slick Hints and Tips to get me there...
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16384

Anyway I hope this helps.

okay I gave up on my old install and installed an R5F1 that I had sitting around.

Now I need a dns server on this box, so I did an apt-get install bind9, it wanted a few things, and then proceeded to hork my box

Unpacking replacement binutils ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/binutils_2.18-1_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/nm', which is also in package libxine1

hhm, what the HECK is nm doing in libxine1 package? It has fits whenever I try to upgrade anything.

Well I guess I'm just going to have to try R5F27 (or whatever the latest is).

I managed to un-hork it by doing dpkg -r libxine1 democracyplayer xine-ui, then continuing with my apt-get -f install, apt-get install bind9, etc.

Okay, any of you who might be in the same situation, just save yourself the trouble and go straight to R5F27, which I finally did!

Congratulations on getting it working.

Something that I found very interesting in this thread:

david.margrave wrote:

Then, 3 hours and 17 minutes later....

And 1 hour 14 minutes after that:

I think that says more about knoppmyth and Dale/Cecil's work than anything else. Not to mention how far things have come with the latest release.
