Hi All,

I was trying to get a screensaver installed per the wiki entry (http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... saverHowTo) and I get this error when running dpkg:

Code:
root@fe-1:/home/mythtv/tmp# dpkg -i libxxf86misc1_1.0.1-2_i386.deb
dpkg: unable to access dpkg status area: No such file or directory

A quick google & I'm thinking my dpkg is broken? Some tips on how to fix it here: http://www.unixadmintalk.com/f59/re-how ... tem-95981/

But, I'm nervous about doing such 'drastic' steps.

Some other related info:
Code:
root@fe-1:/home/mythtv/tmp# ls -l /var/backups
total 24
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root      0 Nov 28 06:25 dpkg.status.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root     34 Nov 25 06:25 dpkg.status.1.gz
-rw------- 1 root root    815 Nov 11 18:10 group.bak
-rw------- 1 root shadow  705 Jun  9  2007 gshadow.bak
-rw------- 1 root root   1170 Nov 11 18:10 passwd.bak
-rw------- 1 root shadow  794 Nov 11 18:10 shadow.bak
-rw------- 1 root root   2986 Nov 11 18:45 smbpasswd.bak

And

Code:
root@fe-1:/home/mythtv/tmp# ls /var/lib/dpkg
ls: /var/lib/dpkg: No such file or directory

I'm suspicious that this may be related to the fact that my FE is a diskless one that boots off an nfs mount on my MBE?

Any tips appreciated!

Since your FE is booting from the backend, I think that you should be installing the screen saver there.. ie. the MBE

Ah, indeed, this did it. I always think of these as completely independent 'machines' but I'm realizing more & more that that is not true.

Thanks,
