I've heard of MythTV for a few years now and have been meaning to make a machine for it, but never really saw enough advantage over using the VCRs. With the conversion to DTV happening next year (and the fact that broadband is finally available at my house
), I finally decided to start playing with it. I really liked the idea of a distro geared to ease of installation; while I'm not a linux/unix newbie by any means, installing/compiling are not my favorite tasks.

Anyways, I'm trying to install R5F27 on a box that I had in the basement that I threw a video card with composite out into, more for playback of various video formats that I download (mostly DIVX and FLV) than for recording. The only capture card I have is analog and doesn't have a tuner in it, so I'd have to connect a VCR upstream to tune to the channel, pass it into the capture card, then out to the TV. (In short, I'm not going to screw with it for ~8 months of recording ability. I'll buy a digital tuner card if I miss broadcast TV enough after the conversion.) Everything seemed to go well with no errors reported, install was a breeze. However, I have no sound.
The motherboard has an Intel 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio (rev 05) controller in it, PCI id 00:1f.5. I've googled for the past 2+ hours and while it seems like this is not an uncommon problem on linux boxes with this audio chipset, there seems to be no firm solution of how to solve it. (There *are* plenty of people wildly speculating about the cause of the problem and solutions that nobody seems to be able to make work, but those are never in short supply for any given problem.
) The module that KnoppMyth wants to load is snd_intel8x0, but when it tries to load produces the following:

I tried using the ac97_quirk parameter with the snd_intel8x0 module with values from -1 to 3, but to no avail. I've also tried snd-hda-intel and the i810_audio modules with various parameters as well - they produce different errors to the same effect. Nothing I've done seems to be able to make this card work. I remember that I had it working at one time in this machine, though I can't remember what distro it was or what I did to make it work. (I *think* Slackware, but can't be positive. I do remember playing with the snd_intel8x0 module for about forever at the time.)
Any ideas?
