In R5F27, I had KDE as the desktop environment. I am trying to get it back in R5.5 but am running into some problems.

I tried using the default /etc/sources.list (tried both stable and unstable):

Quote:
deb http://ftp.debian.org unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org stable main contrib non-free

I tried to follow this wiki as I did in R5F27, but it can't find the "kde mozilla-firefox". So instead I tried "apt-get install kde".

It seems to get broken dependancies no matter what repository I am trying:

Quote:
root@mythtv:/etc/apt# apt-get install kde
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kde: Depends: kde-core (>= 5:47) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

Any ideas?

So with some more investigation, I noticed on the stable page at KDE.org, it says:

Quote:
Debian
* Debian packages will soon be in Debian unstable.

So my guess is the unstable debian package (ftp.debian.org) simply doesn't have a complete KDE package?

KDE.org is on v3.5.9, and the wiki above recommends v3.3. Not sure where to find 3.3 these days, so I guess I'll put this on hold for now?

Following up ...

After I reinstalled R5.5 the correct way (that is, following tjc's hints verbatim), my /etc/apt/sources.list was transferred over. Using the below sources.list, I was able to download kde with no problems.

/etc/apt/sources.list

Quote:
#Debian repos
deb http://ftp.debian.org unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org stable main contrib non-free

#For libnet-upnp
deb http://debian.slimdevices.com unstable main

#For FreeNX
#deb http://packages.debianbase.de/testing/i386/nx/ ./

#For xorg-edit
#deb http://debian.geole.info/ sid main contrib non-free

#For additional multimedia packages
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org sid main
deb-src http://www.debian-multimedia.org sid main
#deb http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/os/Linux/distri ... multimedia unstable main
#deb-src http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/os/Linux/distri ... multimedia stable main

Not sure what the rest of them do that allow kde dependencies to be built, but it worked. ;)

Actually, it turns out it works with the R5.5 default sources.list as well. but probably should still change to stable as well. Although, with the R5.5 hints, its recommended NOT to install KDE because of the dependencies.

Since I was early in the R5.5 upgrade, I gave KDE a shot.

'apt-get install kde' worked for me. So far no instability issues. Just be sure to follow the wiki for partitioning, etc.
