Hi Folks - I am sorry - I have searched and read the forums, I have read the "blank page after install" and the R5.5 hints but this is beating me....

Background - have used Knoppmyth for several generations (it rocks guys!). Am now attempting a fresh auto-install on new purpose built hardware. My main problem is that it is not detecting the video card properly (as noted earlier in the install process). Card is an nVidia based 8500GT on the PciE bus. Please note that my Linux command line knowledge is a little limited - I am used to code but not a lot of unix / linux experience (but learning fast).

At the checking nivida driver page it attempts to start X and then throws the c7 respawning. So I hit ctrl+alt_F2 at that point, log in as root and try to invoke the install-nvidia-debian.sh 173.14.09 -force script as described in the trick hints page (should it be one or two "-" before force and should it be 100.14.09 or 173.14.09?). But I get the following errors:

Code:
ls: /usr/src/debs/nvidia/latest/nvidia etc No such file or directory
etc etc
missing driver packages...
We will try installing from source, uncompressing kernel
there was an error uncompressing the kernel....
try to obtain valid kernel sources..

Should I be booting off the cd for the install? If so, then I have tried that but cant find the path to the script on the cd to run it.

I have also tried a direct wget of nVidia''s suggested drivers via the instructions at the bottom of but was not able to make the kernel compile. I think this was because X was running - but how do I make it stop?

I know I am doing something simple wrong, but guys - I am just missing it I am sorry.

Thanks - Pat

Ok - thanks tjc. So any suggestions as to the error messages when I run it with those parameters?

Thanks - Pat

You might try downloading the drivers from nvidia.com if you can't get the script to work. I had to do this on one system for reasons I can't explain. Let us know how it goes!

What do the following commands show on your box? If it's not R5.5 you're following the wrong directions. If it is and you don't have these seven files your install is seriously roached.
Code:
root@black2:~# cat /etc/KnoppMyth-version
KnoppMyth R5.5
root@black2:~# md5sum $(find /usr/src/debs/ -type f -print)

TJC - you mentioned a roached install in another thread, so yesterday I downloaded a fresh copy off another mirror at my work computer, thoroughly checked MD5 and burn and then installed from that. And it worked - first install, no problems! Interestingly the MD5 and burn checked on the previous one but I am at a loss as to what happened.

Thanks for your patience - the wife is now off my back about her favourite shows.

By the way - I teach television production and have shown all of my students and colleagues your handy-work many times over, and in a country that has only just received the TIVO this has always been described as revolutionary. Keep up the good work and I will make a donation shortly.

Cheers - Pat
