Post subject: | R6 FTP Server |
I am a newbie and am looking to install an ftp server on my stand alone box. At my house I just use my local network but I wanted to hook my parents up and I need a way to send my movies to them. I was wondering if anyone could assist me and let me know which ftp server would be the easiest for newbie. Thanks. |

You shouldnt need an FTP server. If you use mythweb, they should be able to access your recordings/videos directly via the mythweb interface (provided they have the mythweb password). |

Also they are aren't the most computer literate I need to be able to send it to them. Is it possible to transfer files to the computer you connected to that is running mythweb. |

Well, you do have sftp built-in to ssh which is much more secure than FTP. You can use filezilla as the sftp client on your windows or linux box to interface w/ the server. |

Having tried many winxp file transfer methods, I'd recommend putting the server on the parents machine using the dead simple core ftp server available here: http://www.coreftp.com/server/download/msftpsrvr.exe It doesn't require installation, also makes it a great portable app, just double click to run. MS will ask if its ok to run and also unblock the firewall. Then fill in a user, password and directory. On their machine you could set up a directory for movies, C:\movies and then use that as the directory. Then click start. The program doesn't run as a service so when done transferring just click exit. On your end from a command prompt: sftp user@parentsIP You'll be asked to accept a key. Once connected use the command: put movie-of-choice If they have a router, you'll probably have to forward port 21 to their machine. |

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythWeb was the third hit on Google. I'd learn to use Google if I were you. People tend to become rude if you don't look for things first. Mike |

One of my favorite websites. Saw it on the mythtv-users mailing list and it has won a special place in my heart. |

Now I'm going to waste a lot of time finding out how it works. Mike |
