More to the point, if I want to compile <foo> into the kernel, is the configuration file for the kernel source already set up with the values required for a working KnoppMyth installation? Can I just add what features I want? Or do I need to know what all of the settings are and make those changes as well? |

knoppmyth should have an smp kernel already there. look in /usr/src and you should see some kernels. these are precompiled kernel debs and should be much easier than compiling a kernel. the biggest problem with compiling a custom kernel is it breaks lirc ivtv, and a couple of other third party modules and you have to recompile all of those too. |

I tried installing the SMP kernel using dpkg --force -i smp-kernel.deb (I can't remember the exact line as I am at work right now and don't have it in front of me but it was the line that I found in the README file). My question is, during the install it complained about the modules directory. What is the correct course of action? Should I move the existing modules directory and let it install the new one - if I do will I have to re-install other modules (such as ivtv and lirc)? Or should I tell it to continue with the directory still in place? Thanks, you have done a great job with KnoppMyth |

You can safely write over the modules (answer no to not stopping). Yes, you'll have to recompile LIRC and IvyTV. Thanks! |
