Is there a simple way to upgrade mplayer? I'm running R5.5.

A way that will let me keep the old version or switch back quickly if the new one doesn't work?

I've noticed that the mplayer that comes with R5.5 has a few problems with some videos, videos that work fine on my windows box with VLC.

I'm thinking doing an upgrade to just that will fix it for now, as I'm not ready to upgrade to the latest knoppmyth.

I saw there's a vlc for debian but I guess it's a very old version.

Is there a way.... of course there is a way It's Linux there are 10 perfectly acceptable ways to do everything in Linux. Is there a specific reason you are still on R5.5? Most of the forum users are on R6 at least so getting old help is hard to come by.
Sorry that I can't help you. You could try a Debian forum like Ubuntu to find out how they do it.
