OK, here's why.
Got the latest version of nuvexport, which can do MPEG2->MPEG2 conversion for cutting out commercials via the cutlist. Ran it and it says that function is "disabled" and that it needs lvemux and avidemux2.
Neither show up via apt-get. I DLed the source for lvemux and that seemed to install OK.
Got source for avidemux2, and when I ./configure, it is asking me for gtk+-2.0
Code: Package gtk+-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gtk+-2.0.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable No package 'gtk+-2.0' found ************ Cannot identify gtk2 version *************** configure: error: *** pkg-config installed incorrectly or gtk2-dev absent ! ***
"apt-get install gtk+" doesn't find anything. "apt-cache search gtk+" turns up lots of stuff, none of which looks like what I need (including the library entries). Googling for "gtk+-2.0 debian" turns up very little that looks promising. At some point I did a search (don't even remember the terms now) and thought I got a lead on installing some kind of "curses" file, but can't find that in apt-get either.
Then I saw avidemux2 show up in the thread about spit2k1's DVD scripts, and thought I'd post this to see if someone has gone through this.
If I'm doomed to compile GTK+ from source, I will probably just forget about it and keep doing things the old fashioned way (copy to Windows, edit there).
Thanks.

Are you running FC1 with atrpms? If so, there is a sources.list entry for a place by Dag Weirs (sp?). It was rem'd out on my machine, It is where I found all the missing dependencies.
I would try to get avidemux2 from there. I am pretty sure that is where it came from.
Just checked, he has it for all Red Hat flavors.
May help you out.

No, I'm running Knoppmyth (Debian), hence my presence here in the Knoppmyth forums. Thanks for the quick reply.

Sorry, I did not know this was only for KnoppMyth. There are several of us FC1 and debian people here for the mythtvburn scripts.

I didn't mean to imply that--I'm sure it's not exclusively for Knoppmyth (especially the Linux section)... it's just that it's predominantly Knoppmyth.

I've been trying to install the GTK+-2.0 libraries and all of it's dependencies on my KnoppMyth box and it is coming along, but it's not all there, yet. Let me give a brief lowdown of what I've successfully compiled thus far:
1) external dependencies installed: the JPEG (jpegsrc.v.6.b) , PNG (libpng-1.2.5), and TIFF (tiff-v3.5.7) libraries, FreeType 2.1.9.
2) the latest versions of the core libraries: GLib-2.4.6, Pango-1.4.1, ATK-1.6.1.
The last tarball to install at this point is the gtk+-2.4.9...however, I have hit a ./configure error and can not proceed until I figure out why a linked file isn't loading into the configure script.
The GTK library uses pkg-config to build the source with the dependencies. After checking to see if libraries I've successfully installed are listed in pkg-config, I have found that the JPEG and TIFF libraries are not listed. I don't know how to establish this link...but the info and links to all the source code is at the GTK website.
http://www.gtk.org.
I hope that after I set the paths in pkg-config for those missing libraries that GTK+ will compile and install successfully...thus, leading to the installation of avidemux2 and the mpeg2cut option in the updated nuvexport.

Thanks very much for the confirmation that it's not a trivial situation. I may give it a shot at some point... thanks also for the tips on what needs to be done.

you might want to look into aptitude.
with it you can use / to bring up a search and once you find something use n to go the the next ocurance. just like vi.
The packages you will need in order to compile something will end with -dev. The gtk stuff should be available.

I have a similar problem on FC1. I don't remember what all I did to get it working, but I think I just installed all of the gtk+-devel packages. I'm pretty such it didn't require installing much from source.
Hope this helps.
I have a PVR-250 (NTSC), and I'm currently using nuvexport for the MPG->MPG commercial cutting. It's great. I'd love to use this MythBurn script, but I'll probably wait until it incorporates nuvexport. Right now I'm using nuvexport and dvdstyler. I may take a look at the MythBurn scripts tonight since I do already have nuvexport working.

I had a similar problem when I tried to install easytag ( http://easytag.sourceforge.net/). I couldn't figure out which gtk+ libraries I had to install.
Then I realized that easytag was in the debian debs. I installed it using apt-get and the gtk+ libraries were all done automatically for me.
Even if you don't need easytag, you might want to install it to cause all the gtk+ libraries to correctly intall (search for easytag in aptitude to find the correct apt-get name).
In general, I've found it best to avoid installing anything without apt-get. I just wish I could upgrade alsa with apt-get. Unfortunately knx-alsa conflicts with this. I'm not sure why knoppix required a customized alsa configuration, but am afraid to take it off to find out right now...

do you have the nerim.net sources line in your sources list? it's showing avidemux ver 2.0.34 for me, although it doesn't list it as avidemux2 not sure if these are the same programs or not.

Nerim.net is in my sources.list so I tried to install avidemux. It requires a boatload of other stuff, which all downloaded, but then I got various dpkg errors:

well those messages don't tell us much. what were the errors. My guess is they are the standard errors you get quite often when trying to do updates with knoppmyth, and you could most likely search for force-overwrite and find the solution.

Yes, many of the errors were those errors that are fixed by force-overwrite... something about the cache. It's really not that crucial that I get this running, and those "at your own risk" warnings that cesman has said about using the force-overwrite option are too worrisome.
I could have listed all the errors but (a) at my skill level I would have had to hand-edit the text to pull out just the errors (don't know how else to do it), and (b) I'm using putty to SSH into my box at home and my putty configuration defaults to storing only 200 lines in the terminal window.
