Post subject:  Can't edit my.cnf file

I by no means a UNIX guru but I can get around.

In the first few steps of the frontend installation it says to edit the my.cnf file. I boot with the Knoppix CD then choose install and configure frontend. Then it boots up into the xterm but never asks me for the user name or password. I'm just at the prompt. I got into the /etc/mysql folder and use vi to edit the file. After I comment out the one line I try and save but it says read-only and won't save. I even try saving with w! at the : command. I even chomded the file for 777 which gives read and write access to all users. I even tried to su as the mythtv user but same results. The my.cnf file is symlinked to the /KNOPPIX/etc/mysql/my.cnf file. It looks like the CD-ROM mount.

Does any one have any idea on how I should comment out the line in the my.cnf file?

You have to edit /etc/mysql/my.cnf on an up-and-running MythTV backend. The backend has to be working (and have that edit) before booting a second system from the CD as a remote frontend. It sounds like you tried to edit the file on the remote frontend (which of course won't work as it's on the CD).

As it says in the install instructions, "this allows you to use the CD as a frontend if you have a MythTV backend previously set up" (my emphasis).

I did the auto install and it went through smoothly from what I could tell but when I boot from the backend it gets hung while booting at the ms430: daemon started line. It looks like something to do with the TV tuner. Did the install fail somewhere? Should I just re-install the backend?

Here are 2 screenshots of what happens after I load the autoinstall and it boots up:

This is where correct info helps quite a bit.

Searching the forum for "ms430" gives nothing because that's not correct... it's "msp3410". Searching the forum for THAT should give you about 20 threads, some of which discuss the same problem you're having (boot freezes at "msp3410: daemon started").

What TV tuner card do you have? Be as specific as possible.
