I've tried following the LVMHowTo on the KnoppMythWiki, and I get errors around the "vgcreate" part... right about then the instructions say
Quote:
Note: In R5A9, the device-mapper is not loaded by default and so lvcreate will error. Load the device mapper (and set it to load automatically in the future) before running lvcreate. --Abelard Snazz

But that gives me no clue at all what to actually DO (as a newbie what do I type to "load the device mapper and set to automatically load in the future"?). So I'm stuck.

I have the second drive installed and (I think) ready, but I'm stuck. Would love to make use of those extra 250 Gigs!

I am almost positive the next two lines after what you quoted are what load the device mapper

Code:
modprobe dm-mod
echo dm-mod >> /etc/modules

PS: if this was posted in KnoppMyth->Installation, it's in the wrong spot and this may be deleted. If it's Linux->Installation, you're OK. (There's no way of telling the difference between the two sections of the forum from the "new posts" page)

I have noticed this too. I wonder, if its not too difficult, whether cesman could change the names of the forums to "Linux Installation", "KnoppMyth Installation", "Linux General" and "KnoppMyth General" so we would be able to tell in future.

Really? I still don't think I'm in the wrong place.

I guess what I'm saying is, I didn't install Linux and Myth separately. I Installed KnoppMyth, which I view as Knopp (linux tuned for Myth) + Myth combined. The integrated install is a beautiful thing! Since my Q is about installation, and it's a KnoppMyth forum, not a Myth forum, in the Install section... I got here by process of elimination :D .

I did try elsewhere first, though. It was those HowTo's that showed me I needed to be here... instruction details (file names, paths, contents of files) just didn't match up quite right even from the beginning, given that I was using KnoppMyth RA12 and not some other distro, or version of KM. So it's a KM-specific install/configuruation issue, as far as I can see. No other forum here looked closer.

So I hope my choice to post here makes sense. I'm not sure the suggested re-labeling would have led me to put it anywhere else. In fact, I'm sure it wouldn't have.

Don't worry dvanbrunt, you posted in exactly the right place. There has been alot of other posts that have peen put in the wrong place lately, to the extent that some of the superuser savants of Knoppmyth who answer most of the questions have vowed not to answer posts placed in the wrong forum anymore. We were just musing that it is not possible to tell when you are looking at a post whether it is in Knoppmyth Installation or Linux Installation.

Oh, dear. Still no love on the LVM config, I'm afraid.

I did the Wiki Howto instructions, and all seemed to be going swimmingly... got all the way up to the part where you copy all your files off the Myth partition in the new LVG, which contains only the new drive.

The new drive is 250 Gigs, all one partition. The current drives myth partition (which I'm trying to replace with LVM) was less than half that size, yet the copy failed because "No space left on device". got that error for about 2 dozen files. When I look at /mnt/hdf1 (that's where it is) I see that all the myth directories were created ok, but a bunch of .nuv an .nuv.png files just didn't make the move. Now, there should be MORE room on that second drive, not less, and the first drive isn't even full. I used the ext3 file system and everything, so I'm really stumped.

Any suggestions gladly accepted!

D'OH!

It's the small print, the wetware, the devil in the details. I had forgotten to change the number on the line
Quote:
lvcreate -l 4768 vg -n myth

to reflect my own size as determined by
Quote:
vgdisplay vg | grep "Total PE"

Go figure! Works fine now.
